We are think of driving fron Lisbon south and into Southern Spain up to Madrid. Is it easy to find reasonably priced hotels along the way as you go south? Any idea what I sould expect to pay?
Is it eaasy to find a hotel without a reservation?

In Madrid I stayed at Hotel abalu.
Its a quaint little inn, pretty centrally located. From the outside, it doesn't look like much, but if you want a reasonable priced place I recommend here. All rooms come with a private bath/toilet, and plasma TV. A double room was under 90 euros.
A/C is a bit weak but we kept our windows opened, so it wasn't a problem.

You didn't say when you plan on making the trip. I plan on arriving in Madrid and Toledo in the middle of Sept and had a tough time finding places to stay. It seems Spain has a festival from mid Sept to mid Oct. and the hotels filled up fast.
If you plan to be there during that time, I would get Rick's book and begin contacting folks right way for rooms. It doesn't appear they raised the rates unless you must go from a double to a triple, etc.
