hotels in Paris

husband and I taking 11 year old grandaughter to Paris next March. Would like affordable hotel close to a metro stop-not too far out. We are somewhat experienced travellers but want a safe , clean, place to stay-doesn't have to be elegant by any means

Virtually any Paris hotel will be within easy walking distance of a Metro station. See the reviews at www.eurocheapo.com. Go to a library or bookstore and read the recommendations in the Rick Steves and Lonely Planet Paris guidebooks.

Kathy, the Hôtel Esmeralda is just across the Seine river from Notre Dame cathedral (...couldn't be more central). This small hotel has only 19 rooms and sports reasonable room rates ... so, if the room you want is available, book as soon as possible. We just returned from our second trip to Paris this summer. First trip we stayed at Hotel Kensington; second trip we stayed at Hotel Turenne.

Both hotels were safe, with small and relatively clean rooms, near Rue Cler. Metro: Ecole Militaire

If I had to pick between these, I'd pick Hotel Kensington. Slightly closer to the Tour Eiffel.

We just returned from our third trip to Paris. We stayed at the Valadon which was lovely and just around the corner from Rue Cler. Very reasonable and included a tasty French breakfast. Highly recommend.

Kathy, Stay not to far from the Seine, left or right bank would be fine. (How much walking do you want to do?) Most of the sights are there. My sister-in-law and husband stayed at the Hotel Castex near the Bastille, a few blocks from Notre Dame. She said it was extremely clean and inexpensive in a nice neighborhood, but the room was small. What attracted me to this hotel is that some of the rooms were able to be connected by way of a door. I almost made reservations there, but opted for a hotel on the Ile St Louis called Hotel de Lutece. It's moderately priced and I needed a triple and a double for 4 kids and a husband. Good luck.

Kathy,

Stayed at both Grand Ecoles in the Latin Quarter & Hotel Muguet near Rue Cler.

They both meet your needs close to metro etc, nice safe, clean. They also both have a very nice staff.

You can check out their web sites & make your decision. I think Ecoles will let you book three months in advance, while Muguet is six months.

By the way both have EXCELLENT bakeries within a 5 min walk. Ecoles by the Cardinal Lemoine Metro stop & Muguet on Rue Cler.
