For a first time visit (without kids) Our travel agent has just booked us at the Bellevue hotel in Montemarte near Sacre Coeur. I'm told the metro is 2 min away. Is this a nice and safe area? We were originally supposed to be at Hotel Splendid near the Eiffel Tower and there was a problem with our reservation. Is this too far away from everything? After a day of sightseeing is this area charming to walk and get dinner and drinks? I read it's an Artists community which sounds kind of cool. Thanks!
Toby, its not a bad area, although the area known as Pigalle is not charming( sex shops etc) its not dangerous. The area behind Sacre Couer is rather nice, its hilly though, and not as central as some areas, so do make it a point to learn how to use metro, you will need to take metro or bus to sightsee. I have to agree that using a travel agent is not a great idea,, they rarely have any personal experience with the places they book people, sometimes they have never even been to them, or just once years ago. Did you look on the hotel website to compare rates?
At this late date, if trip is within next 6 weeks you will find availabilty is way down, September through mid October are busy months so perhaps she had trouble finding vacancies.
toby, do this, google "hotel Bellevue paris", find the tripadvisor.com reviews. Read them. Hotel seems ok, but there are several posts that say the same complaints over and over, and each time the mangement responds. Read the management responses . VERY interesting. Think about it.
Montmartre is my favorite neighborhood in Paris. I love being on top of the hill overlooking the city. There are some great restaurants there too. Chez Pomette on Rue Lepic, and the mussels and beer joint right next to it (sorry, can't remember the name!) are delightful. However, I don't think there have been any artists living there since the Moveable Feast days well before the war. "Seedy" really isn't the word I'd use to describe Pigalle. And it definitely isn't dangerous. It's more cheesy than anything else. Sex shops are plentiful, but they're far more likely to draw silly tourists in than deviants. As a petite single woman who would frequently walk through the area at night, I never once felt even remotely unsafe.
The neighborhood here is MUCH more lively than the area around the Eiffel Tower. I would stay in or near this area on each visit to Paris I make.
Thank you all for the informative comments. Decisions to be made today. Lots to consider. Appreciate the feedback.
