hotels in Marseille

We are arriving in Marseille by plane in mid June en route to Avignon. We will be traveling by train to Avignon the next day. Can anyone recommend a hotel for one night in an area of marseille close to the train station in a good neighborhood.

"close to the train station in a good neighborhood" cough That might be a bit of a tall order, the whole area around Marseilles St Charles struck me as pretty dodgy.

There is an Ibis hotel right next to the station. Also the city centre (Vieux Port) is only a short metro ride from the station (and is a better area), there are plenty of decent hotels there.

The hotel at the train station is acceptable (was when i was there) but I felt very uncomfortable in the area. If you plan to stay within the hotel the whole time it could work

Why don't you just go up the road to Aix-en-Provence for the night? Not only is it on the way to Avignon, but it's very convenient to the Marsaille airport and a beautiful, gracious town. Besides being a lovely city which goes back to before the Romans, Aix is also a happening college town. Personally I liked the edginess of Marsaille when we spent six months in that area, but why not go somewhere lovely for the night. Aix and Avignon are on the same train line.

Aix isn't as convenient as that sounds for Avignon. Aix town station doesn't have trains to Avignon, you need to use the Aix TGV station which is a long bus ride out of town. Also the trains from Aix TGV to Avignon are all high-speed trains which may charge excessive fares if you don't pre-book.

Thanks for all of the responses. Busing from the airport to Aix- en- Provence is a great idea. I didn't realize it was that close to the Marseille Airport. We are not in a particular hurry to get to Avignon so I think getting to the TGV station will not be a problem.
