Have you looked in RS Spain Guide Book yet? If so, great. If not, it has lots of good information that we used when touring in Spain and Portugal.
Have used the Hotel Europa four times. Perfect location at Porta del Sol.
My husband and I went to Madrid over night. We were hostelling and wanted a good night's rest. stayed at the Best Western off the main drag. Very simple and nice. They had breakfast too.
Check with www.madridman.com -- good source!!
We stayed at the Hotel Europa a couple of years ago. We were traveling with our adult daughter and they gave us two rooms that were almost adjoining. There was a little private, locking entryway outside the two rooms (which each locked as well). It was convenient to be able to move between the two rooms without bothering anyone else or being dressed for a public appearance, especially when we had to leave for the airport very early in the morning. Very helpful staff as well.
My wife and I stayed in Madrid two nights at Hostal la Macarena. It was wonderful. We had a balcony overlooking Plaza Mayor. It is right next to the metro and walking distance to Puerte del Sol. It is inexpensive also. We will definitely stay there the next time we go to Madrid.
Look at the High Tech Hotels chain, they have comfortable large rooms and are pretty reasonably priced, they have properties all over Madrid, we have stayed at 2 of them, both near Plaza Mayor and both were awesome.
