looking for a good hotel in Madrid. Pretty central, walking distance to most things. Nothing too expensive. This is for my honeymoon and we are doing Barcelona, Madrid and Seville. Looking to be in Madrid 3 days in May.
Many have liked the Hostal Europa, on Calle del Carmen right at Puerta del Sol in downtown Madrid. Located along one of the pedestrian-only shopping streets. Go to maps.google.com, activate the satellite view, copy and paste the following coordinates into the address bar, and you'll be able to see it. (40.417245,-3.703938) Activate the "street view" icon to the left to get a better view. I like two smaller hostals, the Hostal Santa Cruz and the Hostal Cruz Sol, both in the same building on Plaza Santa Cruz between Sol and Plaza Mayor. Modern, inexpensive accommodations for about 50 Euro/night. Follow the same instructions above to see the building, with the following coordinates. (40.415321,-3.705606)
I agree with Norm: Hotel Europa was great! Right off Puerta del Sol, just a block from the metro...and easy walk down Calle Mayor, to Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real, and a quick metro ride everywhere. The beds are a bit stiff, but the service and bar and location and price...outstanding!

We liked the Hotel Plaza Mayor. Great locaton, comfy, easy. In Rick's book.
Be aware that rooms in Rick's recommended Madrid hotels often fill up well in advance - don't wait, book as soon as you can.
My husband and I are staying at the Hostal Cervantes in Madrid this May. http://www.hostal-cervantes.com/IN/HostalHTM.php
It is recommended in Rick Steves' book, plus it got great reviews on Trip Advisor, and it is only about 50 euros a night for a double room. Close to the Prado and within walking distance of most places. We haven't been to Madrid before, but checked out a lot of places before booking this one and it looks to be a good budget option.
Hotel Europa -- four times in the past ten years. Recently remodeled so better than ever. Take a room with a balcony overlooking the plaza. Will be a little noisier but worth it.
My wife is currently enjoying her spring break at the Westin Palace. Very central but pricey. May be worth a splurge or see if you can find a good deal ont he internet.
We stayed at the Hostal Gonzalo (recommended in Rick's Spain guidebook) in late February this year and were able to walk everywhere around the center of Madrid. As I recall, it was 55 euros a night plus tax. The room was basic but comfortable enough for our needs.
If you are looking for something not so basic for your honeymoon you might consider Hotel Preciados which is also in Rick's book. Very comfortable, quiet, well located and quite modern.
Best wishes!
Thank you everyone! I was able to get three nights at the Hotel Europa I had been eyeing that one from the beginning of my search for 3 nights, superior room for 110 euro a night plus tax. From what I've seen, this seems pretty good. Thanks again for the advice, I did look into all of your suggestions.
We stayed at the Madrid Palace as well. Perfect location and very helpful staff. It is pricey, but worth it! With the economy you may be able to get a good deal, since Starwood has been offering non-refundable rates at really reasonable cost for a lot of their hotels in Europe.
I second David's vote for the Hotel Plaza Mayor, currently ranked #18 out of 500 hotels in Madrid, within one block of the Plaza...and easy walking distance to everything you could want to see (and right in the old part of town).

Priced very reasonable (about $130 US for a double).
