We are planning a 2 night stay in Lucerne. We are ooking for a hotel (modest price) near the bridge and boat rides.

Lucerne hotels are expensive. You might take a look at Hotel des Alpes, which is right near the bridge and one of the lower-priced ones there. It will be around 200-240 francs for a double room, with breakfast.

Agreed, Hotel des Alpes is an acceptable hotel, good breakfast, great location, and as economical as can be found in Lucerne. Whatever you do, don't be tempted to stay in one of the towns up the lake in the interest of economy.

We were in Lucerne two years ago. We stayed at the Radisson, byt the train station. Unfortunately too many people smoke in Lucerne and it ruined the whole trip for us. Everywhere we went the peple smoked, even in the train stations in Zurich, Berne and Lucerne. The people hold their children and still smoke. It was so unhealthy.

"Wir sind ein Nichtraucherhotel." That is what it says on the Hotel des Alpes website. Sorry to hear of your experience at the Radisson, but the Hotel des Alpes at least is all non-smoking.
