After leaving Northern Italy we will have three nights for Switzerland - the last night will be spent in Zurich so that leaves two days - suggestions? Since we are going by rail would assume we would need to stay near train stations. Looked at a day trip to Thun. Is it worth it, or suggestions for a day trip? Cheaper places to stay rather than Lucerne? 3 adults end of December.
JR, what is you would like to see in Thun? I would be surprised if the lake steamers are running this late in the year. I've been traveling to the Berner Oberland for several years and have been on many a train which stopped in Thun but we've never got off there. I understand that its a nice town by the water but for me it has always looked like a commuter suburb of Bern. Luzern is a wonderful place for so many reasons. Not the cheapest place around perhaps, but there is so much to do there.
Thanks for the info Nigel. Believe your are right on that one. Thought it might be a day trip from Lucerne, but it looks like it might well be smarter to spend our two days in Lucerne only before flying out of London to Heathrow. We had actually considered skipping Switzerland altogether and just taking the train from N. Italy directly to London just for the scenery and having to not leave so darn early in the morning from Zurich. Of course, this would all transpire on New YEars Eve. And then there is finding a hotel near HEathrow.
