Hotels in Heidelberg

We are traveling through Heidelberg for one night, arriving by train then off to Berlin the next day. Any suggestions for a hotel?

In May of this year we stayed at the Villa Marstall Hotel, which I can highly recommend. It is in a nice location across the street from the river, near the Schloss Heidelberg, and just a couple blocks off the main pedestrian zone. The hotel itself is small and boutique-y and the room we stayed in was absolutely beautiful.

HOWEVER. We ended up here because we rolled into town without any hotel reservations, and the wonderfully helpful and cheery woman at the train station TI gave us a list of last-minute hotels that were available at a discount. She said her favorite one was the Villa Marstall and it had been discounted to €95/night (down from €155). We got to the hotel later in the afternoon and were actually able to negotiate a rate down to €80 for the night (not including breakfast).

I mention the price because I'm not sure of your budget and there are definitely more economical options in Heidelberg than the Villa Marstall (if booking in advance).

As an aside, unless Heidelberg has more than the one big train station we popped into upon arrival (we had a car), the touristy part of Heidelberg (Schloss Heidelberg, etc.) is a little ways from that train station and the distance didn't seem walkable.

Good luck!

Dianne, you didn't give a budget or what type of hotel you are looking for (ie: just a bed to luxury) but if it's only for 1 night, try the Ibis Heidelberg or the Hotel Central. Have only been past them but they are very close to the train staion. They both are within walking distrance to the old town if you have the time. I usually stay at the Park Hotel Atlantic, which to me is within walking distance to the castle and old town, but I would take a cab from the train station ... I'm sure it wouldn't be a pleasant walk w/luggage.
