Hi: We are two couples looking for hotel accommodation in Funchal, Madeira. Any suggestions? Thank you.
In 2006 we stayed at Hotel Apartamento da Se. You can check them at tripadvisor.com, also booking.com although it seems they don't take reservations on booking any more. It is located on a street that is closed to cars from 10am till 8pm and is near to a good restaurant, Apollo. We also were two couples and we each had a studio with kitchenette. There is a great patio on the top floor. When we were there they did not serve breakfast but we ate at a cafe across the street. Since the street is closed to cars, we had to wait till after 8pm to return our car. We were able to park right around the corner from the hotel and as long as we left by 9:30am we had no problem. There is also a parking garage about a 5 - 10 minute walk from the hotel. We enjoyed our stay there. If you're thinking of spending any days on the other side of the island, Casa da Capelinha is also a very good hotel to stay. Our room was really an apartment with seperate living/dining room, bathroom, and bedroom. It is a great village to use as a base for that part of the island if you were thinking of such a plan.
Pat, we stayed in Funchal last Feb. 2012 and stayed at the Pestana Hotel chain. the hotel was very nice and inexpensive. They have a number of them in Funchal so check them all out. We stayed in Pestana Village Aparthotels and loved it. There are a ton of good hotels in Funchal. We also stayed at the REgency Club. Both hotels are a ways out of town but we walked in almost every day so it isn't that far. Make sure that you rent a car and drive around the island. It is beautiful but takes a long time because the roads are all curved. Please let me know if you have more questions as we were there for 10 days and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Susan
Thanks for the recommendation. We are booked at the Pestana Promenade. Pat
