Wow - hotels very expensive in Gruyères area. Have looked also in Champéry. Would like to find something under 120 Swiss francs/night - too old to hostel. Suggestions?

We had a double room with a shared bathroom, pretty good breakfkast rate was 90chf. It is a good 5-10min climb from the train station and a 5 walk to the castle.
While in Gruyères drop by the really cool H.R Giger museum bar.

I would also suggest going a bit more south into Lausanne. I know the Lausanne Guesthouse is reasonably priced. I think it's considered a hostel but you can request a room with private bathroom (it's just across the hall and the door locks.

We stayed at Au Bel Air in Leysin. Leysin is a smaller ski resort area. Au Bel air is right at the base of the ski gondola. During our stay in Sept we were the only ones there, so felt very spoiled. Charming host nice breakfast included, great view from the balcony terrace. From Leysin we took days trips to Gruyere and Montreux and Gstaad.
