Hotels in Frankfurt - nice, economical, close to train station

I will be in Frankfurt for a few days next week and am looking for a European-style hotel that is very nice, clean, but economical and close to a train station. I will need to take it to the airport.

I recommend Hotel Excelsior. It very close to the train station. It's not beauttiful or anything, but inexpensive, efficient and convenient. They have a great free breakfast, free computer center and drinks in the mini bar are free too.

It's about 15 minutes direct to the airport--quite easy.

You might consider staying in Mainz. There are three hotels (Königshof, Hammer, and Schottenhof) right across the Bahnhofsplatz from the station, from which you can take the S-Bahn directly to the Regionalbahnhof in the airport. All are reasonable with room prices under €100 for a double, with breakfast buffet.

I've stayed at two of the three and definitely prefer Hotel Königshof (www.hotel-koenigshof-mainz.de). There is always someone at the front desk who speaks English.

I usually recommend the Hotel Monopol which is actually right next door to the Excelsior and I believe run by the same company. Monopol has the same amenities, free mini-bar, free breakfast, wifi hot spot, free domestic calls to landlines, etc, but looks a bit more elegant, especially the reception and breakfast area. Look at the photos and you will see the difference. Public transportation is so easy though, that you don't really need to stay next to the train station. There are some lovely B&B type hotels, one in Westend - Hotel Goelz and one in Sachsenhausen - am Berg. Take a look and see if these appeal to you. All are under 100 € and have charm and some character to them.
