In Colmar we stayed at a lovely Bed and Breakfast called Chez Leslie, run by an American woman. Good location, nice size rooms, great breakfasts, very helpful hostess. www.chezleslie.com Great website.

A couple of years ago we stayed at the small Hotel des Remparts in Beaune. It's recommended in the Rick Steves books and there was a RS tour group there while we were there. Nice clean place with plenty of old-style character and charm. The proprietress reminded me of Julia Child. She and the staff speak fine English but she really blossomed when I used some of my high school French on her. Before I knew it she was even telling me (in French) something about the history of the area during the French Revolution! I barely understood it...but it was fun.

The hotel is on a quiet street inside the old city walls, a 5-minute walk from the old hospice. It's built into the side of the old city wall (The Remparts), and I recommend walking the top of the city wall all the way around the old town. It's like walking through a nice park, but you can look down on the city while avoiding the crowds and traffic.

In Beaune I stayed at the Hotel Henry 8(?), about 1/2 block out of the city at one of the main gates. Convenient, good rates, breakfast included, well run. This was in 2006

Two years ago we stayed in Beaune. We did not have reservations and it was in July. We stayed at Belle Epoque and the website is www.hotel-belleepoque-beaune.com. The hotel was lovely, the rooms were very large, and breakfast was an outdoor courtyard with flowers and umbrellas everywhere. Lots of old world charm.

We stayed at La Villa Fleurie last weekend and had a good experience. The owner was really friendly, the rooms were nice, and the breakfast was good. The owner even had a ballon waiting for our son when we came down to breakfast on the last morning. The only negetive was that it was ~15 minute walk to the city center, but we did not mind since it was a good price for a family room.

We took a day to drive to Vezelay and Semur, which we thought was well worth the drive. Have fun.
