Hotels in Barcelona and Madrid

Looking for hotel recommendations for each city in September. What areas if each city are the most convenient for seeing the sites? Would like to keep between $125-150 per night if possible.

Hostal Acapulco in Plaza del Carmen in Madrid (not a hostel but a small hotel). The rates are even better than your budget. Rooms are big and very clean. It's highly rated on trip advisor...go there for reviews and photos. It's just a couple of blocks over and up from Puerta del Sol, so it's smack dab in the old center. It's in a larger building with two other hotels on different floors. Great place! Others here will recommend Hotel Europa...I haven't stayed there, but it also rates very highly on tripadvisor. Rates are quite a bit higher, but it's definitely a good hotel. We did eat at the café there...quite good.

We also loved Hotel Jazz in Barcelona. Great location close to Placa Catalunya, nice cool decor, great rooftop terrace with a pool. Price for a double was 130euro last May. In Madrid we chose Husa Paseo de Artes based on the location. We wanted to be within walking distance of Atocha station and the Prado. The price was 92 euro which is great for a 4star business class hotel. Not a lot of old-world charm, but it was spacious and comfortable. We were glad to be away from Puerta del Sol as there were political demonstrations and it was noisy and busy in that area.

The Hotel Europa on Playa del Sol is wonderful and you can sometimes grab it in that price range.

I just returned from Barcelona where I stayed at Vincci Maritimo and was very pleased with this hotel. Price is between 90 to 100 Euros. This hotel is located in Poble Nou district where the streets are wide and the street traffic light and thus it is very quiet. It is 10 minutes Metro ride to Placa Catalunya. It is also connected by many trams that run the Diagonal. The hotel is flanked by two parks and is one block from a shopping mall with a super market and many eating options.

Not a better location, Hotel Europa in Madrid - four times in the last ten years. Would not stay anywhere else.

I hope that you will be in Barcelona from Sept 21 through Sept 25. If yes, the Le Merce Festival is scheduled for this time. It's Barcelona's largest festival. We were there for this festival last year and the parades with the Gegants (Giants) and the music were spectacular. We stayed at the Hotel 1898 right on La Rambla. Not inexpensive but it was right in the middle of it. Bar Lobo, a great Trip Advisor top ten tapas bar is right behind the hotel. If you want something more reasonable and still near La Rambla, look into Hosteria Grau. Very reasonable.

In Madrid, Hotel Europa. Nice room, great location and great restaurant/cafe connected to ti. Would definitely stay there again. In BCN, Hotel Medium Monegal. Should be within your price range as we were looking for about the same. Rather basic room, medium in size but clean. Location can not be beat. It's at the top of Ramblas right on Placa Catalunya. A bit odd that you get to the reception desk after walking through a tiny watch shop. But would stay there again. Price and location are big draws!

We loved the funky Hotel Continental Barcelona on Las Ramblas. $110 EU/nite, w/ Bfast, 24 hr buffet, free beer/wine and ice cream. A few blocks from the airport bus stop at Placa Catalunya, right in the "thick of things". Any place that you consider should be reviewed on Trip Advisor.com. Whatever you do sign up for the Fat Bike" tour of BCN: awesome!,

We stayed at Hostal Campi in Barcelona. It's well located and clean - but basic - the staff are good. The ensuite rooms were all booked so we ended up with a bathroom down the hall but the price was decent, for Barcelona, at about 60 euro a night. I'd stay here again. In Madrid, we stayed at Hostal Cruz Sol. It was just okay, small and not perfectly clean, we really didn't see any staff after check-in. The price was good (52 euro per night) and it is well located - about a block from Plaza Mayor - but I'm not sure I would choose this place next time.

We stayed at the Aparthotel Silver in the Garcia district. In your price range, and a small kitchen for breakfast/snacks. Very nice staff, clean and well run
Have fun.

I also liked Hotel Europa in Madrid. Convenient to the museums and close enough to the action without being overwhelmed by it. In Barcelona I liked Hotel Banys Oriental (not sure if I am spelling it right). It is in the middle of a lot of great tapas restaurants in the older part of town, near the Church of Santa Maria del Mar. Its an easy walk to Las Ramblas but a good enough distance to be away from the insanity. I believe it is close to the Picasso Museum as well.

Madrid: Gran Legazpi...a bit far from the center of the city, but easily accessable by metro...It's on top of a metro station. Safe, clean, and they'll even hold your luggage for weeks at a time if you need them to!
