I am traveling with a friend who booked out hotel in Barcelona. I am not 100% convinced our friendship will endure the trip and need some back-up hotels in case I need to find myself a hotel. I want safe and clean. I am a solo female. I am hoping everything works out...but need to be prepared. Suggestions?
That doesn't sound like a great situation to be in. That said; there are a number of suggestions with comments from this NY Times article; http://travel.nytimes.com/travel/guides/europe/spain/catalonia/barcelona/hotels.html I can vouch for the Hotel Colon, and http://amisterapartmentsbarcelona.fr/ Good luck.
Wow. Best of luck - just in case. Tell us what your budget is so we can better recommend suitable lodgings for your Plan B. Don't want to recommend 5-star hotels if you'd prefer "hostales". :-) Saludos, BarcelonaMan (& MadridMan) @ you-know-where!!
Moderate. Maybe 100 to 150€ a night? I am trying to change my flight home and may need just one night, but right now I am set to stay 2 nights in Barcelona.
When traveling solo, especially a woman, it is all about the location. I suggest you look at hotels/hostAls as close to Placa Catalunya as you can get. This area is right in the center, but very safe for walking around, even at night. You are close to some good tapas restaurants in the Eixemple, along Passeig de Gracia and Rambla Catalunya. (I am assuming that the protest camp that was there in May has not returned, but even if some protestors remain it does not make the square dangerous, just interesting.) You are also very close to the Aerobus to the airport. It leaves from Placa Catalunya on the side by Corte Ingles. A very nice boutique hotel that comes to mind is the Praktik Rambla, very modern/trendy in a lovely old building, right on Rambla Catalunya. Booking sites like Venere are showing prices of 87 euros for a single room in July. Another is Hotel Denit, just below the square and a block off Las Ramblas. Price around 129 euro for a single. There are others (we loved Hotel Jazz) but they all seem higher in price. Check the reviews on Tripadvisor. Praktik Rambla is one of the highly-rated ones there. That would be my personal pick for a solo stay.
Am typing this from my room at the Hotel Barcelona Universal in (you guessed - in Barcelona!). Can't recommend it highly enough. Decent location (about a 25 minute walk from the Old City on the Avenue Paral-ell). It's safe, but like in any big city, keep your wits about you - one of the members in our party is in her mid-20s and attractive and was getting lots of male eyes following her (nothing more than that, tho). Service was in English and VERY helpful (getting us rooms quickly upon morning arrival at BCN, delicious restaurant recommendations. Rooms are large by European standards, VERY clean, have a/c, free Internet, in-room bathroom with bathtub, and good beds (a little firm, but not too bad). Room rate was around US$160/night (I THINK - I prepaid it several months ago) and is WELL worth it.
I've stayed at the Tryp Apolo and the Tryp Airport and both were nice.
The Hotel Colon is in a great location facing the Cathedral and is very nice (5 stars?) with a price to match but with advance booking they have rooms for as low as 80 euros. If you were planning to reserve a back-up room know that in Spain the hotels often have a 48 hr cancellation policy.
i have stayed at hosteria grau twice. it is near the ramblas and has a convenient metro connection. it is very clean, quiet, and has a cool bar/bistro next door. the staff is helpful but somewhat reserved. have fun, be safe.
We enjoyed L'Antic Espai, a small boutique hotel near Playa de Cataluna, very safe & clean & a great place for a solo female. Wonderful, helpful owners. Very responsive to inquiries.
We've also stayed at Hosteria Grau mentioned by Jeff above. Our room was clean and the staff very nice. Price was v. good (about $110). However, our room was not quiet at all. It faced the street and while some noise is expected, I thought the level of noise here was extreme - from revelers exiting the bars below and around the area to the noisy garbage truck arriving promptly at 3:00 am each day. Although the hotel is a couple of blocks from Las Ramblas and Plaza Catalunya, I thought the intersecting streets a few feet from the hotel were not particularly safe. After 11:00 p.m., the young drug dealers come out and claim their usual spots at each corner of the intersection. One of the hotel employees told us to make no eye contact and keep on walking. On our final night there, we saw a guy brutally attacked a few feet away from the hotel's entrance. It was just past 1:00 a.m. As we were waiting for the ambulance to pick up the poor guy, the bar patrons next to the hotel came out and told us it was most likely a drug deal gone bad; one of them said it's always the same "s---t around here."
Just returned from Spain. Stayed at a small boutique hotel - Pension 2000 - across the street from Palau de Musica Catalunya, very close to Placa de Catalunya. 3-star budget hotel, clean & quiet, 85 euro/night. Low-key, family-run place and I'd stay there again.
Hi Angie, I stayed at Hotel Fira last summer. I literally booked it the night before I left because the apartment we booked fell though LAST min. It is not in the downtown part of the city and is mainly a buisness hotel. I really liked it because it had Texas style AC, HUGE rooms with GIANT bathrooms and a gym. Good luck!! Kathleen
