Hello - I am travelling solo to barcelona, and am looking for an inexpensive, safe, clean hotel near the city center. I don't want to be right on Las Ramblas - but close to it. Any suggestions? Thank you!

I just got back from Barcelona yesterday and stayed at Hosteria Grau, one long block off the Ramblas. (Room was 45 euros, but if I'd reserved earlier, it would've been cheaper.) The street it was on was well lit at night, so I only felt a little scared walking back alone at 10:30 pm. The hotel's front door is always locked, so they have to buzz you in, which made me feel better. Great A/C, free wifi (with a shared terminal for those without a computer) and very clean, but my room was not ensuite, and there were warnings everywhere about not taking much with you and not leaving things in the room. I was expecting to feel very unsafe travelling alone in Barcelona, but it didn't feel much scarier than any other big city. Wear a money belt, don't carry many valuables, and have a fun time!
I've just returned from a 4-night stay at Hostal Goya in Barcelona: very comfortable, safe, clean--about a block and a half from Plaza Catalunya and the top of Las Ramblas. It's a half-block from the Metro, but we walked to the Gaudi sites, including Sagrada Familia. Also just a short walk to the Cathedral and Barri Gotic We paid 90 euros per night for a large double room with private bath; less expensive rooms are available. The airport bus runs regularly between Plaza Catalunya and the airport for just 4 euros. I wore a moneybelt and didn't set my purse down unattended, but we weren't hassled or bothered by anyone at all.
Two years ago I stayed at the Hotel Continental Palacete recommended in Rick's guidebook. It was a lovely neighborhood in the Eixample. Close enough to walk to Las Ramblas, around the corner from a Gaudi house. I really liked it, they had a 24-hour food bar that was good for breakfast and snacks. It was a few blocks walk from where the airport bus dropped us off so that's wasn't fun with suitcases but you learn. People were nice and it felt pretty safe there. Very quiet in the evenings.
Hotel Regina. Just returned from there and loved the hotel and its location. About two blocks off Las Ramblas. Have fun!!!
