my boyfriend and I are in the planning stage of a trip to France. We are doing about 2 weeks total. One week or so in Paris and one week elsewhere. We are looking for a decent hotel not to far out that won't break the bank. I will be seeing Rick at the New York TImes Travel show in a few weeks where I will be buying the latest RS France book. But just wondering if anyone had some suggestions. Thanks, Kim
Say hi to Rick, for us, when you see him in NYC. His book France 2009 gives listings for good value Paris hotels close in, in Paris you don't have to go "far out" from the city center to get good values for your hotel euro. Not cheap, it is the big city, but reasonable compared to high cost cities such as London, Amsterdam and Venice.
Kent is correct - Paris is blessed with an unusual number of hotels below 100E/night - many grouped in close in neighborhoods. One such area is around the Place de la Republique. Not too far from the Marais and the Pompidou and well connected by Metro. We stayed in the Hotel de Nevers. The cheapest rooms share bathrooms on the hall. Others have bathrooms ensuite. We reserved easily by e-mail. The owners are very friendly and speak some English. The evening staff didn't speak English when we were there and this drew complaints on Tripadvisor from some people who equate Parisians not speaking English with rudeness.
Hope this helps. Good luck!
We stayed at the Hotel International a few weeks ago and found it to be a wonderful bargain for the quality and location. The bathrooms were spotless and included a tub (something I have not found in many hotels in Europe). The staff was friendly and helpful - even looked things up on the internet to answer our questions. The neighborhood included a close grocery store, an inexpensive bakery, and a few restaurants and was just a short metro ride to the attractions.

Last fall we stayed at the Hotel de Nesle. It is located in the Latin Quarter and was full of charm. Every room is different and the lobby ceiling is covered in 100s of dried flower bouquets.
If you're staying in Paris for a week, it might make sense to rent a small apartment. I've done that once before (2nd time coming up in June). You can walk a block (or less!) and pick up your breakfast from a boulangerie, shop at street markets or small groceries for lunch items to eat as you tour, and either cook in or eat out for dinner. For the upcoming trip, a friend and I rented a 1-bedroom, 1 1/2 bath apartment near the Eiffel Tower (and Rue Cler) from Vacation in Paris. There are also MANY other rental agencies. Have a wonderful time!

There are several very affordable small hotels in the 5th, which is a great location to be based. There are bars and restaurants everywhere, easy walking distance to a lot of sights, and several food markets as well. Check out Hotel du Commerce (€60 double w/ shower).
We've also stayed in Hostel Perfect (which is really
a hotel). It's located just a few minutes below Sacre Coeur, but along a nice residential street with lots of bakeries and restaurants. Private double is €70.
