Hello,
What are some great, clean, safe hotels that are walking distance to the Eiffel Tower? Also, close to a marketplace, shops, train station, basically convenient for a tourist. Thanks for your help!
You'll get the usual answers, but check a map. The Eiffel Tower is pretty much way the hell and gone from almost everywhere. Walking to it (which you'll probably only do once) means it'll be a long hike to any place else. The two train stations closest to the Eiffel Tower are both about two miles away (in different directions) and both head to seperate parts of France. If you mean metro/rer stations, there's a couple or three hundred of them scattered around, so you can never be far from one.
In 2010 we stayed at the TimHotel. The hotel is less than 2 blocks from the Dupleix Metro and a ten minute walk to the Eiffel Tower. It is just around the corner from several markets (deli, cheese shop, pastry shop, roasted chicken & ribs shop, cooked & raw seafood shop. We used these shops for all our dinners for our nine nights in Paris. The hotel had great breakfasts. Don't know if you would call it a great hotel but you can check it at booking.com and tripadvisor.com.
tia, One of the most convenient areas to stay within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower is the Rue Cler neighborhood in the 7th district. Some may feel that it's too "touristy" but I don't find that to be a problem as I'm usually out touring all day anyway. Excellent Metro access is provided via the Ecole Militaire station, so getting from there to other parts of Paris is very easy. There are also a few other notable sites in that area, including the Rodin Museum, the Military Museum and (as I recall), Napoleon's Tomb. Some hotels you could have a look at are Hotel Duquesne Eiffel, Hotel Muguet, Hotel du Cadran, Hotel du Champs de Mars or Grand Hotel Leveque. Happy travels!
Tia, I concur with Ken. Rue Cler is where I have stayed twice. A nice neighborhood, within walking distance to the E. tower and close to the metro. And the metro is good public transportation as a majority of all sites are very close to a metro stop. Happy Travels.
Well I rather agree with Ed, the area around the ET is not the most central, and frankly other then that one section of Rue Cler there are more shops , cafes and cute areas in the 5th and 6th,, in dozens and dozens of visits to Paris I have never stayed there( Rue Cler) and I haven't missed much. I also took one Rick Steves Tour and we did not stay in the 7th then either.. we stayed in the 14th. I bring this up because while RS books promote the Rue Cler area, RS knows there are many other lovely areas in Paris to stay in, that are just as central and lovely( he can't write about all of them , that would be a seperate book!) These hotels are cheap, clean, and very central. They are within walking distance of the RER line that will bring you in from the airport, and within walking distance of many sites/cafes,/ and markets( there are street markets all over Paris) and metro lines. Hotel Diana Hotel Eugenie Hotel Saint Pierre Hotel Le Regent
Hotel College Du France I have stayed in the first 4, and would again. The last one is just well recommended and I like the area. I have stayed other hotels too, but these were the most budget friendly). If interested in the right bank I have a few recommentdations for that area too, and they also are well located. All are very safe, in fact when walking back to hotel at night as a solo woman I tend to prefer not being in residential areas( which is what many parts of the 7th are ) because I prefer being where there is still some people out and about in cafes etc. Alot of people put alot of stock in staying "near the Eiffel Tower" but it really is not the most central area, I think its just the one landmark they are most familiar with..
Tia, I like the area around the Eiffel Tower and can recommend the Hotel Londres Eiffel. I've stayed there twice and have reservations again this year. The prices have gone up a bit due to some recent renovations but check the website and see if it's in your budget. The hotel is a 2 minute walk to the ET and maybe 5 minutes (in the opposite direction) to Rue Cler. You're near Napoleon's Tomb, the Rodin Museum, and the Quai Branly museum (have lunch on the patio of their cafe for a fantastic view of the ET). You'll also find a grocery store, laundromat, and numerous bakeries and pharmacies nearby. I hope you have a great time in Paris!
We really like three places in the Rue Cler area....the Hotel du Champ de Mars is very reasonable, updated, and very French. Check put the trip advisor reviews. Depending on when you are going to be in Paris, this hotel in not air-conditioned. Two other choices that do have AC are a lot more...but very nice. they are the Relais Bosquet and the Du Cadran and the Valadon. They sometimes have Internet specials but are quite a bit more money. The Champ de Mars in very reasonable, but all of these hotels fill up quickly...usually are full 6-12 months in advance. there are many restaurants, cafes, chocolate shops, the Rue cler market, 2 fine carryout delis, many shoppes, the metro is close, also the post office, tabac.etc.
If you're looking for convenience for a tourist, I agree with Ed and Pat. The area around the Eiffel Tower requires a metro, bus or batobus ride to almost anywhere else. I have stayed there, so I know. After my first trip I have preferred to stay in the 5th, which is much more central and convenient. Really anywhere near the river in the 4th, 5th & 6th is more central and close to the things you say you want for convenience. By all means if staying near the Eiffel Tower is important to you, you should stay there. Just be aware that it does not meet the criteria you say you want.
If you have a Rick Steves book that covers Paris, the hotels in the rue Cler neighborhood are all within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower. Metro is convenient from there, also buses. No train station is close but St. Lazare is probably closest.
Everyone has their own Paris, so don't let others force theirs on you. If the Eiffel Tower is the most important to you and you want to stay near, then fine. That probably means the Rue Cler neighborhood and some people think it is too full of RSI types but many of us think it is fine. We stayed in an apartment near Rue Cler and walked over every night to see it lit up. Very nice. We also walked everywhere we wanted from there, including to the Louve, Notre Dame cathedral, Ile St. Louis, Musee d'orsay, and Pompidou Center. We did hop to bus to the Marais but that was easy. Fare du Nord for the Eurostar was a taxi cuz we had luggage.
