Don, I see you've given up on staying at the airport. It is expensive. CLICK HERE for a previous thread on this question. A few hotels are named. Also, you can use the search feature on this site. That's how I found this thread.
would still like to stay at the airport....
i assume the train station goes to the airport and there may be a hotel in walking distance from the trian station and we could take their shuttle to airport next morning?
Accor hotels has an Ibis hotel about 3 miles from the Zurich airport....business-type hotel, so not really much around it. Rates Fri-Sun are about $95 US, weekdays around $110 US. See their site athttp://www.accorhotels.com/accorhotels/fichehotel/gb/ibi/2980/fiche_hotel.shtml . To confirm they have an airport shuttle, email them at [email protected]
Don, not much within walking distance of the airport. The train station is directly under the airport terminal. There are, however, numerous shuttles to go to and from the airport. Also, you can stay at a hotel close to a train stop miles away and easily ride in in the morning.
Note that almost every major hotel has something near the Zurich airport. Like Frankfurt and Munich, it's a major hub. You may also want to look at www.tripadvisor.com. You can see which hotels are near the airport and which are not.
I've stayed both at an airport hotel with a shuttle and a hotel in the old city that was next to a tram stop. Of course the tram leads to the train station which takes you straight into the airport.
I much preferred the hotel in the old city. There are many good hotels in the old city, but we stayed at the Helmhaus. This year we're staying at the Pension St. Josef which gets excellent reviews on tripadvisor and is quite affordable for Zurich standards.
Staying in the old city with shops and restaurants and movie cinemas close by is much more enjoyable than staying at an airport hotel that is not close to anything.
I was there in Sept 07. I would recommend staying in Old Town too. I stayed at the IPR hotel (I booked it through the tourist info office). It was nice and close to the train. Also I would go and figure out the train system before the day you need to get to the airport. It is marked but if you are in a hurry it is a little confusing.
