I'm looking for a hotel to stay at the night before flying out of Madrid. Many of the inexpensive hotels I've found do not have shuttle service and the taxis seem costly. Should I just stay in Madrid and take the metro to the airport? We don't fly out til 11:30 am. I'd like to find a triple w/breakfast for around $80.
Cindy: A taxi is too expensive, and the Metro will most likely require a change or two (but is cheap and doable for sure). If it were me, I would stay in the city center and take an Aerocity shared shuttle to Barajas (inexpensive, hassle-free, and door-to-door). You shouldn't have to worry about traffic that time of day. They’ll pick you up at your hotel on time and will only stop a max of 3 times. Cost is €23 for up to 3 people. As for a budget hotel, check out Hostal Acapulco on tripadvisor. In November, we had a quad with private facilities and balcony overlooking Plaza del Carmen for €85 per night. Great lodging…highly rated as you’ll find on tripadvisor. No breakfast, but there are lots of places on Gran Via and Puerta del Sol area (couple of blocks). Can’t recall the name of the hotel right across the plaza from Acapulco, but there’s a really great café on ground-level. Hotel Europa near PdS has a good café. Also, there’s at least one small market on one of the side streets leading to Gran Via from Plaza del Carmen.
