Headed to Oktoberfest 29 Sep 09...looking for reasonable hotels in the Garmisch/Munich area (can be near but not in town)...just got home from Afghanistan, thus the late planning...any suggestions?
The hotel prices all go up for the Octoberfest as you probably know. There are a few double rooms left. I googled Hotel Antares, Munich. They have nothing left but if you plug in your dates and then click on "check nearby hotels" a few come up. The cheapest was around 1300 Euro for five nights. Good luck! P.S. I arbitrarily selected five nights but used your starting date of Sept. 29.
Is the Eidelweiss booked?
I love the Fraundorfer, but wouldn't be surprised if that's full too.
Two years ago, I stayed in Oberammergau on the last Thurs and Fri nights of Oktoberfest and in Landsberg am Lech on the last Sat night. I had no problems getting reservations and prices were reasonable (O'gau, €25/nt Ü/F).
I'll put in another vote for the Edelweiss if you can get it.

Charming place with great staff and location.
My wife and I stayed in Garmisch in March '08, and we stayed at Reindl's Partenkirchner Hof. Loved it. Five minute walk to the Zugspitzebahn, and five minutes to the rest of the town. Great views of the Zugspitze. Good little bar, and an excellent restaurant. The buffet breakfest was really good. The staff was was absolutely helpful and nice. I honestly can't say a bad thing about the place.
Might try Gastehaus Zugspitze in Farchant. It's about 3 km from Garmisch. Very nice owners.

Welcome Home!
Gasthof Zum Rassen is great!
