hotel suggestions for Barcelona?

for my cousins, ages 60+, in good health. Looking for a clean room for the night, not 5 star type of people, but not 2 star either. They are catching a cruise so within taxi range would be good. Ideas? Restaurant suggestions for local fare would be appreciated too! TIA

Across Spain, you can find two-star hotels that are comfortable, many of which include en-suite bathrooms. They're called "hostals," similar to the pensiones you find in other countries....small family run hotels that can be great value for your money. They're two-star because they don't have added facilities like restaurants or room service.....not because they are low quality. Hotel search websites, or even hostel sites, will list many choices of "hostal" in Barcelona.

Hotel Colon on the square opposite the Cathedral...great 3 - 4 star hotel...best location in the Barri Gotic, near the Ramblas but not on it (far enough away to avoid the crowds). The best diner we had in Barcelona was at El Pintor about 2 blocks from the Colon (in the RS guidebook). About 1 mile from the cruise ship boarding area.

Carol, your cousins can try hotwire.com.

They can choose what star rating and price. The only mystery is the hotel name but you can go to http://www.betterbidding.com/index.php?showtopic=12693 and this site has a cheat sheet on possible hotels, based on the star rating, the icons and the location.

Or, try http://www.thefiverooms.com

As for food, there's a ton to choose from! Tapas crawling is great since you can leave anytime and go to the next destination.
