From all that I have heard regarding the Hotel Stabbach in Lauterbrunnen, my wife & I plan to stay there. However, I would really like to have a few recommended alternatives. Thank you.
Kit,
I stayed at the Hotel Oberland in Lauterbrunnen last year on a Rick Steve's tour. It has a good location and some nice views of the Alps and Stubbach falls. The rooms are on the older side, but were comfortable.
Darla,
Thank you. Since you mentioned the Hotel Oberland, I recall hearing the recommendation before. I appreciate it.
We ate at the Oberland. Once. That was enough. The view out of the breakfast room at the Staubbach was wonderful. Loved watching the paragliders playing in the waterfall every morning. Mariam, the manager was great. We had a room on the back side with a view we liked very much. I used the balcony several nights and took pictures of the full moon shining down on the snow and waterfall. I'm sure there are plenty of other places to stay. I just didn't pay attention as we were quite happy.
We stayed at the Hotel Silberhorn in the last few days of May of this year. It's 500 feet from the train station. RS doesn't cover it in his book but it's a great stay. One of the best restaurants in the valley. Check out www.silberhorn.com. Ask to stay in their annex. We stayed on the 3rd floor and the room had a great balcony. Great views. Note that they close in mid-October for Shoulder Season (60 days)
Larry,
If the Silberhorn's website is any indication, this certainly looks like a good choice. Thanks a lot!
We also stayed at the Oberland last year. We loved it. It was nice being able to sit out on our balcony and see the mountains and Staubbach Falls. The owners were very friendly and all the staff we encountered spoke good English. It's right next door to two grocery stores and convenient to everything in town.
We also enjoyed the food. Some of the deserts were very yummy!
The Hotel Silberhorn is off the main street by about 300 feet. I don't know when you plan to travel, but if you go in late May to mid June, you get to see the farmers walking their cows, with their wonderfully loud melodic Swiss cow bells, up to summer pasture. Almost daily, they go past the front of the hotel. Also, the wild flowers of these lower alps are in full bloom. It's stunning.
Kit, I too am staying in the Staubbach early Oct. for the first time. From all the reviews I've read it seems to be a good spot to hang your hat. Hopefully, Lauterbrunnen will still have some restaurants/bars open for the shoulder season. Good luck!
We will be in Switzerland from Sept. 18 - Oct 3. Hopefully we will miss the tourist rush but avoid many places closing for the season. That's the game plan.
Well, I took out my Rick Steve book to answer some question and found that The Oberland was the place we ate the most and we loved it. Mark, the owner, was great and talked to us every time we were there. Daniel was a great waiter. The place we didn't care for was the hotel across the street from The Staubach. Good thing I looked at the book.
I would love to see the cows come down from the highlands. What a sight that would be. When I was there in Sept. two years ago the flowers were already frozen for the most part. You never know.
