Hotel rooms in Spain

I am really interested in staying at Hotel Europa in Madrid. However, I have not received a reply to an email I sent this past Sunday the 6th. I found another email address in Rick's Spain 2008 book (info@hoteleuropa.net as opposed to the address listed on Hotel Europa's website info@hoteleuropa.es) so I sent yet another message yesterday. Is it possible they don't pick up their messages daily? Am I being too impatient?

But, here is what I need to know. My husband, myself and our daughter (who will be 10 when we travel) are going to be travelling in Spain for two weeks. All the rooms that I see on the internet say double or twin. Well, I need at least two beds and one has to be a queen size. or 3 twin beds would even work. This information is not readily available on any hotel's website (at least I couldn't find it). I don't want to make a reservation w/o knowing if we will get the sleeping arrangements that we need.

Hopefully one of you more experienced European travelers will be able to guide me.

thanks in advance!

You should call them. My wife and I have stayed there a couple times and like the Hotel Europa. The person working at the desk speaks perfect english and can answer your questions. Have a great time. Madrid is magical.

Why not call them?

Their number is: 34 915 212 900

You can use a 10 10 number, like 10 10 987. It costs 6¢ per minute and 53¢ to connect. It comes on your landline phone bill.

To call it using 10 10 987, you would dial this:

10 10 987 011 34 915 212 900

I was trying to avoid calling them due to cost. but I may have to....or choose another hotel that answers email. I was hoping someone would here might know the answer to my question. perhaps someone will still ring in.

Madrid is magical! I have fond memories of my jr. year in college there many moons ago.

I tried the hoteleuropa.net website but it keeps changing to a calendar page.

When we go to Madrid, we stay at Hostal La Macarena, right outside the Plaza Mayor

macarena@silserranos.com

Ricardo answers email quickly.

I am not sure what time of year you are going, so a head's up here. I am not sure if the Macarena's rooms have just fans or some have A/C. I live in the US Southwest and am accustomed to Castilla-type summer heat so it has never mattered to us.

PS I spent year at Universidad Complutense and loved it too!

Opps, missed the part about need three beds and one of them has to be a queen.

That's going to be a problem. I don't think practially ANY of Rick's hotels have queens. Good luck!

'"That's going to be a problem. I don't think practially ANY of Rick's hotels have queens."

It's only a problem if a person limits his/herself to Rick's hotels. There are plenty of other good places that aren't in Rick's books.

I agree with Paul. and, actually, Hotel Europa is listed as having "triple" rooms. so I will either call to clarify my question, just book it and the option of "triple" will be on there when I book, or just choose another hotel. the options are endless :)

I appreciate all the replies! thanks so much.

oh, btw Paul, we are going next May. and the reason I am anxious to make a reservation for Madrid is because I know it is festival time in Madrid during May. so am trying to get a jump on it now. thanks for the hostal recommendation too.

okay, finally have this figured out! I think the triple room at Hotel Europa is what we'll need. I told hubby we may have to sleep in twin beds and he's fine with that. whew. and I really want to stay there!

so, next question is (and hopefully someone will see this and know the answer), if I book it now and the exchange rate goes down, will I get the better rate? or do I get whatever rate I book at? of course it could continue to go up, in which case booking now would be advantageous.

thanks again. I appreciate all the help!

In reference to your room rate going down. If you book and they quote you a rate I doubt that will change, that is probably locked in unless they give you something in writing. So basically it all depends on the exchange rate when you pay for the room and the way things go who knows what it will be then. In other words the only way it will go down is if the dollar makes a rally against the Euro.

Something else to think about, I haven't read anything on it lately but there was quite a bit of construction in the Puerta del Sol where the Hotel Europa is located. Maybe someone can update us with that info.

Barry...."there was quite a bit of construction in the Puerta del Sol where the Hotel Europa is located."
As of last May, construction on the new Metro station at Sol was still going strong, although the central part of the plaza is back to semi-normal. Unfortunately, the work has moved east, in front of the Hotel Europa. And, as of May, the hotel itself was wrapped in scaffolding around part of the west and south side (facing Sol) as work continues to refurbish the facade.

thanks for the info! exactly what I needed to know!

We will be in Madrid the latter part of May next year. surely the construction in front of Hotel Europa will be done by then? here's hoping!

Toby....they've been working their way around the building for the last two years or so. Maybe see if you can ask them when it might be finished. I hear that the construction in Sol is just about finished. They opened the new Cercanias commuter rail station there in late June....a big plus if you're coming in from the suburbs...or even from Chamartin train station. It's connected to the Sol Metro station, where three lines intersect. There is apparently still some cosmetic construction being done on Sol, but it should be finished by next spring.

Hi Toby,

I know that Hostal Macarena has triple rooms because we rented one there in 2003.

location on GPS: +40° 24' 52.71", -3° 42' 29.60"

Our last trip to Madrid was 2007, and Puerta del Sol was all torn up. I believe that as of June the cercanias train to Sol is running.

We'll be there in mid-April and will be glad to provide an update.

We stayed here December 2008: Hostal Triana, @ Calle de la Salud 13. It is in Rick's book. We had a triple (three single beds) for 72 euros. It's nothing fancy, but clean and well located.

In Granada we had the family room at: Hotel Anacapri @ Calle Joaquin Costa 7. Again, this is in Rick's book and was our favorite lodging of our Spain trip. If you show your RS book, you get breakfast free, which is a great deal. It's a very hearty breakfast.

In Seville we had a triple at: Hotel Alcantara @ C/ Ximenez de Enciso 28. It's in Rick's book, too. Nice place. Great Flamenco show next door.

In Segovia we stayed at: La Casa Mudéjar Hospedería @ C/ Isabel La Catolica 8. This is not in Rick's book. I think the one bed might have been a queen, then we had two single beds for our kids.

I think it might be quite a challenge to find queen beds unless you stay in "chain" hotels and not family owned establishments.

Good luck and ENJOY!

thanks Arlyce! I just sent the email to book the Hotel Alcantara in Sevilla. I have heard nothing but good things about it and it looks cool from where I sit in MN (we are practically neighbors!). so thanks for that reenforcement.

and I was looking at Hotel Anacapri too, that might be where we stay.

thanks for the info, appreciate it!

your neighbor to the west :)

oh yea, one more question. I have the 2008 Spain book, will that work?

thanks!

"I have the 2008 Spain book, will that work?"Sure...there's always the chance a hotel or restaurant has fallen off Rick's favourite list, but otherwise the information he provides will stand. But don't depend on it for opening hours or entrance fees for various sites...these change even before he can get the latest edition onto the store shelves.

shucks, the Anacapri doees not have a room for us :(

thanks Norm, that helps!
