Hotel room in Rothenburg, Germany – with lift or no stairs

Can you recommend a nice hotel or B&B with a room that is on the ground floor or has a lift? My husband can walk fine but he has arthritis in his knees and cannot go up or down stairs, more than 4 steps if they are not steep.

We stayed last Christmas at the Hotel Reichs-Kuechenmeister. It is a very short walk to the town square. There is the 'old' part of the hotel and the newer part around the corner which has an elevator. These rooms are very modern and comfortable.

We've also stayed at the Eisenhut and love it as well. Very rustic and charming (and right across the street from the Kathe Wohlfahrt store.

Kitty - I can recommend the Hotel Reichskuchenmeister (umlaut over the 'u') on Kirchplatz. I have stayed there 3 times, and will go back again and again. The hotel is traditional in style, and the rooms are not huge; however, the location and terrific service make it my hotel of choice in Rothenburg. It is very centrally located - just off the main square in front of St Jacob's church, @ one of the main shopping streets - Schmiedgasse, - which leads right down to the picturesque Plonlein - the famous house that sits on the Y in the road. The Christmas market is right outside and around the corner, and other attractions in the town are right down the block.

As for accessibility - from the outer, ring road, you can drive your car right into the historic area thru one of the old stone entryways - look for Galgentor sign ... once into the Altstadt, just travel straight ahead down Galgengasse, and the hotel will appear on a corner on the right. You may pull right up to the front door of the hotel to unload. You can then park your car just down the block in a space reserved for hotel guests. Ask @ the hotel desk, and a staff member will escort you. The hotel entry door is only a step or two from the street level, and they have an elevator just off the lobby. In addition, they have a wonderful restaurant on the same level as the lobby, and an outdoor biergarten in season. Enjoy !!

Kitty,

Tripadvisor and Hotels.com have information on accessibility. You might do a search in those places for hotels that fit your budget and are accessible. You don't have to book through the sites, either. I often use them to find a place and then book directly with the hotel.

Incidentally, I did a quick check on both sites and Hotel Eisenhut in Rothenberg historic city center has a lift and it doesn't look like there are any stairs into the entrance where I assume the lobby is (based on the photograph on Hotels.com). For Bacharach, Hotels.com didn't have any listings, but Tripadvisor had a couple. Hotel Am Markt is highly rated and has a lift. I don't know about steps to enter the hotel as I didn't see any photos that were obviously the entrance. I don't know when you plan on going, but I would book your hotels quickly as both are popular places. I had to go into October to find available rooms in Bacharach.
