Hotel review for Hotel Astoria Trier, GermanyPart 1

THE GOOD: Great location, nice clean rooms, good parking at a reasonable price, good champagne breakfast. The supporting staff such as late nite front desk worker Julia were great! She was a bright spot in the stay.

Maybe the best place for a review would be at TripAdvisor - but I haven't seen a review from you there. I did see that as long ago as 2009 they were not accepting credit cards so that shouldn't have been a surprise. It was rated number 17, I think, about midway down the list. BTW - what do you have to pay to get champagne for breakfast?

Wow you sure are defensive of this hotel..do you work for them? My review on trip advisor is submitted and will post soon. Everything in my review is true and was my experience..others experiences may differ. For the sake of others I hope that they do. Also if you are a fan of Rick Steve's and his books you will notice he states....Unless otherwise noted, breakfast is included, hotel staff speak basic English and Credit Cards are accepted. Cheers Nigel!

THE BAD: Paula the owner took the opportunity to argue with everyone in our group (party of 5) including yelling at me not to step on her clean floor (I thought floors were cleaned for guests, not cleaned to keep guests out) . She was very snappy with everyone in our party at breakfast if we did not do things as she felt they should be done. One of our friends in the party picked up a decorative glass by accident and poured orange juice in it and was quickly instructed that glasses were already on the table(hard to convey the negative tone using words). Also at breakfast when we asked for something Paula would reply with "i'm getting ready to come to your table and ask you if you wanted that". The internet was free however it was only free one hour at a time. You had to walk to the front desk every hour to get a new internet code. And you were required to sign for the internet code. Paula insisted that my 55 year old mother walk down and up 3 flights of stairs to sign for her own internet code, instead of just allowing me to sign for it (I was paying for the room). Finally after arguing with her she was gracious enough to allow my mother to just turn in the signed copies when she came down stairs next time. Also this hotel does not currently take credit cards. Paula is in dispute with the credit card company. (I guess she likes to argue with them too). She does not advertise this and does not tell you this at the beginning of your stay. I believe that if most Americans knew they could not use their credit cards we would not stay here. I asked her why she did not say this on her website or on the sign out front of her hotel. Her replay was "there is not sign out front saying that I DO except credit cards".She also lectured us that we needed to carry

My original post got cut off.... She also lectured us that we needed to carry Euro's with us while traveling in Europe. Of course we travel with Euro's in Europe but we do not carry large amounts with us because that is unsafe. Even our friends who are German didnt have enough Euros on hand but she accepted their "Euro Card". So this is not a horrible place to stay just be prepared to do verbal battle with Paula on the details of your stay.

I'm not defending them, Lisa, I'd never heard of them. I just got back from 3 nights this week at the Hotel Petrisberg which is where we always stay when we go to to Trier. I was just saying what I found in a couple of moments with TripAdvisor, and that 2 years ago at least one review said they don't take cards. I certainly would question a mid-table 17th position hotel. We pay €98 for a fantastic balcony view of the whole city with free parking and wonderful breakfast with goulaschsuppe home-made by the brother of the owner, home-made jams, lovely eggs with crispy bacon made fresh, cheese herbed at the hotel, oh- did I mention the view? So, I know not about your hotel. No champagne at the Petrisberg but plenty of Moselle wines are about. Still wondering about your chanpagne.

We paid 62 for a single and 85 for a double. The champagne was a nice touch. One small glass was offered at breakfast. We were never asked if we wanted another glass and we were all to afraid to ask Paula. We were afraid to pick up the wrong glass. We were afraid to ask for something extra. We were afraid to be corrected and insturcted at every turn. This should not be the case for good Customer Service or guest hospitality. And it should not be the way you treat people if you want to remain in the Rick Steve's guide book. The Hotel Petrisberg sounds nice. We probably would have liked to stay there. However the 20 min walk (as decribed by Rick Steve's) would not have worked for our group. The overall point of my review was...Hotel Astoria fit most of our requirements. However, we felt that Paula (the owner) was not helpful or welcoming. We felt that she would rather leture us than say I sorry but we do not except Credit cards at this time. I also feel that she is trying to hide that she doesn't except credit cards or she should would make it better known. However, she knows this would hurt some of her business. That is why I wanted to make it clear here on the Rick Steve's website and other websites where I can write a review.

Interestingly, the website for the hotel says that this person is the owner: Sudhir Sahani

I will have to look though my photos. I don't know if we took any of the hotel or the room.
