Hotel reservation vs. showing up in Cassis and Provence France

I'm trying to find a hotel for mid-september in or near Cassis. Everything with an online presence is booked! Is it safe to just drive there and find something along the road. I haven't traveled in Europe before and so I don't have a sense of how easy it is to find a good spot in the moment instead of through reservations ahead. Any ideas out there?

We stayed in Cassis in mid September...drove there without reservations...we were referred to the Hotel Mahogany by the local TI office. The only thing we did wrong was not to reserve a second night...we really loved our stay there, but when I asked for another night the next morning, I was told that no rooms were available and the town was sold out... http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g196673-d595601-Reviews-Hotel_Mahogany-Cassis_French_Riviera_Cote_d_Azur_Provence.html

I had a similar experience- our hotel asked if we wanted two nights- we said No- they didnt tell us the next few days had a lot of events- if its a nice area, much better tio stay in same hotel if only two nights

You'll have a better chance of finding something if you go on a weekday and the earlier in the day the more likely you'll find a hotel. Cassis can be very busy on the weekends with French tourists.
