Hotel recommendations in Munich & Frankfurt

I am very impressed with the wealth of knowledge shared on this website.

Any suggestions for mid-range priced hotels in Munich ($100-$180 per night)? I'm also looking for a hotel near the airport in Frankfurt. We just want a place close by so we can easily get to our 11 am flight home.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I would not stay near the airport. None of the hotels are next to it except the Sheraton and it is very pricey. You will spend more time getting to your hotel "near" the airport than it would take just hopping on one of the quick trains into town. The S-bahns and regional trains run every 10 min. or so and take between 11-15 minutes depending on which stop you get off at. You can buy a single ticket for 3.80. If you get to Frankfurt early enough, you will have time for some sightseeing too. Wonderful, very old, very historic German city with lots to see and do.

How many people and what are the dates?

Jennifer,

For Munich, I'd also highly recommend Hotel Uhland. It's in a great neighborhood, the staff are wonderful and the breakfasts are awesome!

Sorry, I don't have any information on Frankfurt. You might check your local Library to see if they have any copies of the Germany Guidebook, as there are suggestions in different price ranges listed there.

Happy travels!

Here are a few suggestions, all either easily accessable to the Hauptbahnhof by foot, or by getting on the S-bahn to the airport at a different station, such as the Konstablerwache. This would add 4 min. onto your trip:

Jo and everyone else - thanks for the specific information. I think we will take your advice and stay in Frankfurt rather than near the airport. I need to learn to trust the public transportation (not so great here in Alaska!)

Jo - there will be two of us. We are in Munich for 2 nights - June 10 and 11 and then travel to Frankfurt on Sat June 12. We are planning to go to the Technology & Science Museum in Munich but other than that, we are fairly open with our plans. (We are both science teachers so our geeky personalities are looking forward to the museum.)

Munich. Tourist class Hotel Ludwig opposite the train station. Review their web site for specifics.

Here is a listing of hotels in Munich that I compiled from recommendations on the board.

Blauer Bock
Viktualienmarkt
Royal
Uhland
Seibel
Münchner Kindl

Of these properties, I have only seen Uhland from the outside. It looked nice and was in a nice neighborhood. Depending on the date, it might not be in your price range, but worth checking.

Note: I have never stayed at any of these as, when I stay in Munich, I almost always (16 nts) stay at a non-English speaking hotel in the suburbs (EZ $72, 2BZ $98, Ü/F).

For staying near FRA, I have stayed at and can recommend Hotel Königshof in Mainz. It's just across the Bahnhofsplatz from the Hauptbahnhof, 2 S-Bahn/hr, about ½ hr.

As for Frankfurt Hbf to FRA, there are four S-Bahn per hour from the underground (tief) S-Bahn station at Frankfurt Hbf to the airport. These are S8/9, direction Wiesbaden or Mainz. So if you go down to the underground station, you can count on an S-Bahn within 15 minutes.

There are also some S-Bahn and regional trains leaving from assorted tracks in the ground level part of the Hbf. Check the schedule before deciding which part of the station to go to.
