We are looking for a relatively cheap hotel ($100/night for a double room) in Zurich for two nights in August. We're arriving at the airport and leaving on the train. Any ideas?
$100 a night is going to be tough in Zurich.
On of the least expensive places I know in downtown Zurich is Hotel St Josef, where a double room without ensuite bath is 140 CHF.
The Radisson Blu at the airport---right in the airport---has decent prices on weekends (only), with a advance purchase price of 150 CHF. That would be in a new, modern hotel with ensuite bath, but lacking in Swiss charm and a train ride away from the downtown for dinner, etc. in the evening.
Or you could try Priceline. People have reported getting very good deals on 4-star hotels in Zurich. The problem there might be location, so be cautious and look at maps before you commit.
But why 2 nights in Zurich when you arrive? Where else are you going? Zurich is pleasant enough for a day and and evening, but in comparison to the rest of Switzerland . . . well . . .
We always spend our first night in Zurich, arriving from the west coast of the US in late afternoon. But we'd never spend 2 nights there; we'd get on with our trip.
Ijust flew home from Zurich. I could not find a hotel for less than 150chf. Stayed near airport at a Welcome Inn double no air conditioning was 200CHF.
The Ibis chain is less but the one we stayed at in France, the room was miniscule so I did not try the Zurich one. There is a bed and breakfast switzerland site, (bnb.ch) you can try, but they are sometimes off the beaten path and may not be much less expensive. I too, would probably not stay more than one night.
