Hotel Recommendation for Nice?

Hi there! I am going with 2 of my girl friends for a quick weekend trip to Nice in a couple of weeks. We are flying in early Saturday morning and flying out late Sunday night. We may go to Monaco or St. Tropez during the trip as well. Can you recommend a hotel that's centrally located and easy to get around? Thank you!

Hotel Mercure right on the main promenade with the Mediterrean across the street. Close to the old part of the city, a nice walk up the hill to the port and within walking distance of the Museums, a bus terminal for easy rides to Monaco and Ville Franche de Mer.

Janie,

First of all, could you confirm that you'll only be spending about a day and a half in Nice? Considering the distance you'll be travelling, your flight times will probably be longer than that!

For a Hotel suggestion, you might consider Hotel Suisse. It's in a great location with a beautiful view down the "Promenade des Anglais" and only a short walk to lots of interesting restaurants and street markets. The airport is somewhat visible from the Hotel (it's at the opposite end of the bay).

Depending on how long you stay, a day trip to Monaco will take at least four-six hours, including travel time. If you want to stop in Villefranche, add an hour or two. If you're travelling by Bus, you can walk from the bottom of the hill up to the Royal Residence, or you can take another Bus. Monte Carlo is on the "opposite hill" and while you can walk from Monaco it's a bit of a hike (and you'd have to walk back for the return Bus to Nice).

Is there any chance you could add an extra day or two?

Happy travels!

Hi Ken, I neglected to mention that I am currently in London right now in my original post. We are getting into Nice around 9 am on Saturday and flying back to London around 9 pm on Sunday. As much as I would love to add an extra day or two, we all have to be back in London before Monday. Thanks for the hotel suggestion! I will definitely take a look at it.

Shelley, thanks for your recommendation as well!

Janie, if you are only going for two days and have not been in Nice before I would be tempted to just stay in Nice. One thing, and I think Rick mentions this as a hokey little train trip in his book but recommended it, is to take the little choo choo train from the Promenade des Anglais. It only costs 7 euro each and gives a good overview of city and a great opportunity for photos from up Castle hill. By the time you do the Cours Saleya market, walk old town you may not want to take the time to go elsewhere. Another thing that was fun was renting a lounge early in the morning right on the waters edge and enjoying the beach for a few hours in the morning. A typical "Nice" thing to do. If you do go to Monaco we got the bus one way for a euro and the train back to Nice - but that will take the better part of one of your days. Have fun.

Janie,
I just returned from a trip to France that included Nice. I second the recommendation for Hotel Suisse.

Last fall we stayed at the Hotel le Royal which is right on the Promenade des Anglais and we had a fantastic view of the Mediterranean. Can't beat the location. Enjoy!
