I'm looking for a recommendation for a budget hotel in Madrid. I've never been there, so I need advice for a neighborhood as well. What I'd like is a place with a comfortable bed with excellent public transportation connections and a mix of locals plus tourist ammenties. It's nice when there are grocery stores and cheap places to eat nearby, too. Thanks!
I like to stay at the Hostal Cruz Sol in downtown Madrid. It's on Plaza Santa Cruz, a few steps from Plaza Mayor, and a few more steps to Puerta del Sol, but just off the main pedestrian route between the two, so it's quiet. Lots of small cafes around, and the basement supermarket of El Cortes Ingles department store is on one of the pedestrian streets just off Sol. Singles from 40 Euro. Singles have shower and sink, with toilets just down the hall...doubles, from 50 Euro, have complete bathrooms. Modern and comfortable. Check www.hostalcruzsol.com
Thanks for your advice, Norm. I'll check it out right now.
Rats! Hostal Cruz-Sol is booked up for the week I want to go in March. Any other suggestions?
I hope you're not travelling easter week...o/wise you may be completely out of luck. Try Hostal Santa Cruz, in the same building but on the second floor instead of the third. I've never stayed there, but I think it's owned by the same family. A little more expensive at 50 Euro for a single, but they say all the rooms have ensuites. Hi Matti,
We stayed in the Hostal Cervantes (mentioned in Rick's book.) It's basic but in a great location near the Prado. www.hostal-cervantes.com
We stayed Hotel Europa, which is a recommended Rick Steves hotel and centrally located in Sol in October. It's near everything...see Norm's description of the area in the previous post. We also liked that there was a computer with internet access in lobby so that we could email the kids. We also loved a bar called Tempernillo walking distance with a fabulous ice cream parlour next door. Enjoy!
try looking on hostelworld.com. My wife and i stayed at a hostel there last christmas and it was excellent. we had our own bathroom and the furnishings were wonderful. All of these amenities were for a cost of less than 60 dollars per night (total for the room!!). I am sorry that i cannot remember the name of the place.
