I'm trying to find a reasonably priced hotel in St. Germain De Pres area. I"m looking at hotels recommended by Rick and other travel guides. On various websites such as the hotel's own site, or travel booking sites, I see "promotional rates" on the front page. But when you go to book, the rate is MUCH higher, and there is no link, contact or information on how to get the lower advertised rate. I have yet to find the rate a travel guide has promoted. What's going on?
Have not stayed at Hotel des Colleges but it looks really good and gets great reviews. Some rooms have balconies, antique ceiling beams, etc. A few rooms are are 100 euros. Great location too. Priced higher at 140 euros or so is Hotel Bonaparte near St Sulpice which is a perfect location. HDC is near the Cluny Museum.
Nancy,, I have found and booked 9 hotels in Paris over the last few years,, using recomendations from other posters, reviews posted on tripadvisor.com, and once just by doing a walk in visit to a hotel I thought looked good.
Don't just rely on published guides,, they are that, guides, not rules to live by. I suggest you post your requirements,, ( how many people what type of bedding you want and budget,, in EUROS) and see what people suggest. I have always had good luck by booking directly on hotel websites,, but I have used a booking agency once for a hotel in London.. and it was fine also. Read cancellation policies carefully,, many are pretty good,, but some special rates are only if you pay upfront for whole stay and are completely non refundable. Guides are published with information /rates from previous season,, it takes time to go to press ,, so rates are often a bit higher each year. So,, if you give us some info I bet you can get some good suggestions.
Nancy Hotel rates in any major European city are based on the tourist season, the day of the week, whether there are major conventions in town, special events (October Fest in Germany which is in September!), etc. Hotel prices change all the time. Think of airfares. Just as you would with airlares, check the rates on the discount websites but also the hotel itself. As PPs have said you need to tell us the Euro amount you want to spend, the number of people in the room, and any other prerequisites. If you have been to Europe before, you know the taxes and usually breakfast are included in the room rates. Also room rates are based on the number of people in the room, NOT the room itself. Looking forward to seeing additional info from you. Bobbie
If I could find something in the 130 Euro a night range, I'd count myselft Lucky. I'd like to be in St. Germain De Pres if possible. Or near there.
I meant to say I'm one person, and just need a single room.
In Paris anyways,, room rates often do not include breakfast unless clearly stated.
Hotel Eugenie,, I have stayed there, clean, very central . Also look at Hotel Le Regent, the rates may be higher ,, you didn't say when you were going, but I have gotten deals there also,, rooms small but nicely done, very central also.
Stayed at Hotel du College last year - very centrally located and good value - In May we paid approx. 140E but wanted to be in that area. Very clean rooms, small but they all are in Paris. Breakfast good and if you choose this one try the restaurant across the street. Excellent - they offer a special each day- Locals flock to this place. My husband had parsley ice cream - I should have had it as it was to die for.
The restaurant across from Hotel du Colleges is Pre Verre (Rue Thenard) and we really liked it also. I think we had that parsley ice cream! This location is just perfect for Paris-St Germaine is very central to many sights. I would think a single room would be under 140 euros-breakfast included is an added bonus. Good luck with your decision!
Thanks to all who have offered such helpful advice. I'm on the trial. I am going in January (when you'd think things would be at rock bottom) and will have to try the parsley ice-cream!
Nancy - We are going to Paris at Christmas. I looked for a long time and finally got an apartment through Vacations in Paris for $125.00 american per night. We checked it out on Tripadvisor. It comes with the ability to call the states free. We like the apt. thing - it is not for everybody. You have the ability to cook if you desire. This one is located in the Mouffetard Market area.
Thanks - Bill
