My wife and I are making progress on our itinerary for an 18 day visit to France, Switzerland and Germany beginning the last week in April. We now need to refine our plan for the 5 days we'll be in and around Munich starting May 5. We'll use the U Bahn, S Bahn and trains for transportation within Munich and day trips. The Hotel/Pension has to be convenient to a U Bahn stop as we will be departing early in the morning and arriving late in the evening for a couple of the day trips. Here's the hard part: We're hoping to find a clean, en suite room in the range of €85/night. I've contacted Hotel Bristol (booked), Pension Linder (booked); Hotel Uhland and Hotel Bayerischer Hof (haven't received a response from the last two). Any additional hotels we should contact?
I just booked a single room at Hotel Eder for 65 euro a night. It's very close to the main station, and I thought it looked nice.
Jon, Hopefully you'll get a favourable reply from Hotel Uhland, as that's the one I would suggest. It's not exactly close to U-Bahn stops as it's about a 10-minute walk from Munich Hbf, but I still find it to be a convenient location. Happy travels!
Uhland is in a nice neighborhood, but, depending on the date, it might be pricey. Nevertheless, it is worth the shot. It's only about 2 blocks to the nearest U-Bahn stop (U4/5, Theresienwiese), and that line goes to the Hbf, but the walk to the Hbf is not that far. " The Hotel/Pension has to be convenient to a U-Bahn". The U-Bahn is not the only underground train in downtown Munich; the S-Bahn goes from Marienplatz to the Hbf. I've listed several places near Marienplatz, that have been recommended on this website
Jon, in 2001 we stayed at Pension Seibel near the Viktualienmarkt and thoroughly enjoyed everything about it including the staff, the breakfast, the room (a Triple) and the location. I see the current rates are 69E-189E but suspect that the 189E is during Oktoberfest.
Thanks to all who posted a message; I'm happy to report I received a response from Hotel Uhland, and we're booked. However, please keep an eye on "To the West", as we are still looking for lodging in Lausanne, Luzern and Hamburg. (same criteria as Munich). If we have trouble finding a place we can afford, I'll be back on the Travelers Helpline. Thanks again
We have not been here yet, but we made reservations at http://www.pension-jakobsplatz.de/_eng/index.html which is in the same buildiing as the Pension Linder (I believe). The reviews are good and the rooms like small, simple, but nice. I stayed with a friend of a friend in Munich last year and I have asked her to check it out.
