We are ending our 10 day trip in Europe late September in Munich. Smack dap in the middle of Octoberfest, which means no room in the local hotels. Can anyone recommend a hotel between Munich and Munich Airport or anywhere close. I would like to make a day trip into Munich if possible by train.
Jay, Hopefully Lee will spot this post, as he just returned from that area. If I recall correctly from his Blog, he spent some time in Freising, which is a short distance outside Munich and very close to the airport. I don't have any information on Hotels there, but Trip Advisor has a number of listings. If it's on the S1 or S8 lines, it will be very easy to get back and forth to Munich. Happy travels!
Hi Jay, We can second the Erding recommendation. We stayed at the Best Western Park Hotel. Just a few minutes from the train sation and a few minutes from the charming old town. Paul
I did stay in a Privatzimmer, of sorts, in Freising. The S1 splits in Neufahrn and one branch goes to Freising (the other to the airport), and there is a 20 min bus from Freising Bahnhof to the airport. Freising is 43 minutes by S-Bahn from the Hauptbahnhof. However, I suspect a lot of people know about Freising (or Erding), and it might be difficult to find places there for Oktoberfest as well. Erding is 50-52 minutes by S-Bahn from the Hauptbahnhof. If you are interested in Erding, don't go through the Munich accommodations website, which is a captive of the booking website HRS and only lists the most expensive places (unless that is what you want). Erding has it's own accommodations website. It seems to be only in German. Click on "Hotels & Pensionen" in the top banner. You can find accommodations in Freising here. Click on "HotelsenglPDF" for a listing of hotels along with direct contact info. If it weren't for the desired nearness to the airport, I would suggest Landsberg am Lech. I stayed at a place in Landsberg on the last night of Oktoberfest in 2007, and I don't think they were completely filled and they had not raised their rates. Landsberg is about an hour by train (change in Kaufering) from the Hbf in Munich.
If you want to stay in Munich, and are willing to pay $300 or more for a double room, you might well find one. I chose a random date in the last week of September ( Sept. 26) and Venere.com came up with 84 hotels, many right in the heart of Munich. There were also rooms for under $200 in the suburbs.
Jay, I second the Best western Park hotel in Erding. It is located across the street from the train station. I've stayed there a couple of times and been well satified. The town of Erding itself is quite pleasant and about a 5 minute walk from the hotel. As I recall, it was about a 45 to 50 minute S-Bahn ride from Munich.
Like you, we are leaving from Munich during Oktoberfest, (Oct. 2) and the hotel we chose for our arrival on Sept. 3 is twice as expensive on Oct. 2. We chose a hotel in Rosenheim for our last night for only 75 euros, not bad considering that it is only 30 mins by train to Munich. However, our flight out is around noon, so we have time to get to the airport. Everything closer to the airport is very expensive, and we love the Rosenheim area. (south of Munich just off autobahn to Salzburg.) Other great little towns in the area are also possibilities. Good luck.
