Hotel or B&B

We tried to book a Dbl in one of Steves book listing and were told we could not book for 6 days in Sept. until the end of June. But, stubbornly, I tried again in late May; surprisingly, out of the blue, a reply offered us the double we wanted. A day later, I responded to the offer in the affirmative--even offered to pay a deposit to hold it. Another day passed and I was told "...sorry, we have no rooms for that period in September." Now confused, really needed that 85 euro room near Lux on the RER B line. Advice??

lindley, It's possible that in the day between the offer and your reply, the room was rented by someone else. That's a good price for a room, so I'm sure others would be looking for a good deal as well. In the same situation, I'd check the Guidebook to find another Hotel, preferably in the same area. If there were no rooms available in that area, I'd look in other areas. That will probably mean that you'll have to increase your budget though. You could also check Trip Advisor to see if there are other Hotels in the vicinity, that perhaps aren't listed in the Guidebook. Good luck and happy travels!

Lindley look for rooms anywhere along RER line B,, so near St Michel too. I think its going to be a bit tough with that budget for September, some hotels have good rates for July and August, but highest in September and June. September is also hard to find availability because its trade show and fashion month in Paris, rooms get booked up months in advance , leaving fewer rooms for tourists! Check out Hotel Diana, its close enough you can walk to the ST Michel stop, and its generally got decent rates. I looked at a hotel I have stayed at (Hotel St Peirre) but its looking booked up for most dates. You can also check out Parisbestlodge apartment, I have read nothing but good about themm and have booked myself for July. I would also consider bumping up budget if you are set in staying in that area, its popular and touristy.( but a good area nevertheless) What dates are you looking for exactly?

Lindley, I agree with Ken. I would try and find a different place. I don't understand why they would tell you to wait til end of June. I've booked small hotels and B&Bs 9 months out and never had a someone tell me I was booking too soon.

Our need is for Sept. 5 - 11 in Paris. I see that daily, our options are thinning out. We are not "train savvy" so we hope for something within a five or ten minute walk from RER "B" from CdG Airportarriving in Paris between 7-8 p.m. not conducive to on again off again metro/bus rides carrying luggage in a strange city (wait 'til you hit 70, then you'll understand). Our budget max is about 140 euros for a nice, clean Dbl, non-smoke, facilities ensuite. Anywhere from the Seine south to Luxembourg, Port Royal, Denfert, Cite Univ. We have looked into several B&B's, but in most cases either the host, property or agency seemed a bit "faster" than U.S.
B&B's which have always been good experiences. Some of the agency fine print said that if the host is predisposed suddenly, pipes break, etc., we lose our down payment, but if our airplane or the RER breaks down, we are up that familiar creek. Would appreciate any ideasand thanks for the really good comments already received! Lindley.
