We were in Nice last summer and wanted to stop in and view the lobby of the magnificent Hotel Negresco which you spoke about on your show. We were turned away from the doorman and told we were not allowed and since we don't speak fluent French we were not sure why. Our driver who brought us to Nice thought maybe there was a private showing at the time. Can a tourist or the public stop by or do we have to be a register private guest? When I googled, it did seem like a public musuem. We will be in Nice next week and would like to stop by again if we can. Could it also have been the way we were dressed since our companions had a backpack and looked very touristy. Please let us know asap since we will be going there in a few days.
Thank you.
Sher - I have never been a guest of the Hotel Negresco but I have walked through the lobby on two occasions with no problem. We didn't have backpacks and were nicely dressed and just walked in like we belonged there.
It sounds like there may have been some sort of private event going on. We were not guests, but not dressed as "tourists," and walked right in. We also had drinks at the bar.
We have been able to go into the hotel two different times. We had no problem. We didn't have a backpack and we try not to dress too much like tourists. We acted like we knew what we were doing and just walked into the hotel. Perhaps policies have changed or as the other poster said, perhaps there was a special event. Good luck! Let us know if you are able to visit.
It would seem unlikely that any public hotel would keep people out unless there a special reservations event. I walked into Hotel Negresco like I belonged there, nobody said anything to me or barely looked up, and I proceeded to take pictures of the interior. Even then no one said anything to me or said pictures were not allowed. Give it another try and I'll bet you find no objections.
