We will be arriving in the late afternoon at Schiphol and want a nice but not too expensive hotel where we can set up our cycles (a recumbent trike and a folding bike)and leave a suitcase. Something on a quiet street would be great so that we don't have to fight major traffic the next morning. Any ideas would be appreciated.Thanks.
I don't have a specific suggestion, but I think a B&B in Haarlem might fit the bill.
Rick's guidebooks usually recommend a few, but there are many.
The local TI might be able to help find one that meet special criteria (e.g., near the train, space to assemble bikes, willing to store suitcase, etc., though I don't think those would be especially hard to meet).
Thanks for the idea, but I think we are looking for something closer to the airport. Someone told us that a cycle route leaves from the airport itself, so something close to there,or with a good shuttle to the airport, is probably what we need for the first night.
You can indeed assemble your recumbent and unfold your bike at the airport and ride from there, but you'll have to haul your gear (a trailer, perhaps? Ir a wheeled suitcase?).
Or there are hotels at the airport.
Or you can consider the frequent, direct buses (or trains, though there is an easy change in Amsterdam) from Schiphol to be the "good shuttle" you seek, and stay in Haarlem (or A'dam, but I don't think you'll find what you want near the train station there).
Hi Lesley,
I also like the idea of staying in Haarlem.
We have stayed at the Novotel Hotel near Shiphol. Amsterdam city centre is 10 kilometres away and Schiphol Airport is located at 5 kilometres from the hotel with a free shuttle bus available.
Lesley,
Where are you cycling to? There are cycling routes and easy signs to follow from every city in the Netherlands. Are you cycling around the Netherlands (carrying your luggage with your)? Because if so you could easily ride to Haarlem or Amsterdam and be there before it was dark. I think it would be a shame to waste an afternoon around Schiphol.
That being said Citizen M is nice, budget hotel/hostel near the airport. http://www.citizenmamsterdamairport.com/
Thanks for the ideas--they made us think about NOT staying near the airport on the day we arrive.
Our plan is now to cycle to a campsite {Camping Sollasi on the banks of the Oosterduinse Lake(which we found by googling Haarlem)}. That will put us in a good position to go to Keukenhof the following day.
We may stay at CitizenM on our last night before heading home.
Does anyone know anything about this campground?
Thanks again.
