Hotel near Neuschwanstein Castle

We will be driving from Rothenburg towards the Neuschwanstein Castle and we plan to stay in a hotel nearby the castle so that we will be able to visit the castle the next day. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a hotel in that area? We don't mind staying a short drive from the castle.

We stayed at Gutshof zum Schluxen in Pinswang Austria. It took us 15 minutes to get to the castle, and it is even possible to walk of cycle there via an old route along the lake. This hotel was among the highlights of our three week trip, and the restaurant is fantastic.

Kevin,
Did you book this hotel online? How far ahead do you need to make a reservation?

You can stay either right at the foot of the castle in Hohenschwangau or you can stay in the little village of Schwangau closer to the lake with a fantastic view of both castles. Hotel Rubezahl is in Schwangau as are several other hotels and B&Bs. You can read about them here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g198564-Schwangau_Bavaria-Hotels.html I love Schwangau because it's in the middle of farmland...pastures, cows, bicycle trails little hotels and restaurants and private houses are dotted all around. Hotel Rubezahl has bicycles for their guests to use free of charge. You might also try Hotel Helmerhof which is practically next door and about 1/3 of the price of the 5-star Rubezahl. The food at the Helmerhof is wonderful.

We liked Hotel Alpenstuben in Hohenschwangau. Very close to the ticket center if you are picking up tickets, and within walking distance to both castles. We had a nice quad room, and ate dinner on their patio two nights in a row. They had parking available.

Hi Helen, We can recommend the Hotel zum Hechten in Fuessen. We stayed here twice. Free parking, nice rooms and good buffet breakfast. The front of the hotel is in the pedestrian zone and parking is in the back. Neuschwanstein is about 10 minutes away. www.hotel-hechten.com Paul

Helen: We stayed there in the summer of 2008. I made the reservation during the late winter or early spring. You can do so online at www.schluxen.com I then followed up with a telephone call to confirm. The phone number is on the website. Kevin
