I will be arriving in Paris and leaving the next day on the Thalys train. Need good hotel near Gare du Nord - any ideas?
Many thanks!
The Accor hotel chain has several hotels near Gare du Nord. Check out this Ibis hotel.
Thanks. It appears to be within walking distance of du Nord and a safe place. I also need to get from the airport (CDG) to it. Rick's guide suggests a cab especially if one is tired and unfamiliar with CDG. Definitely I will be tired. Will want to stash bags at hotel until formal check in time. Some allow this, others don't - do you know if this one allows it? Alice
We stayed at that Ibis a couple of years ago and found it to quite nice. Very friendly staff, decent breakfast and close to the train station. There is a great Italian restaurant in the neighborhood and a bakery across the street that was fantastic.
I arrive CDG Sept 1. Leave on Thalys Sept 2.
Thanks Bets. I will book it and take the quieter location across from the Gare du Nord. Taking the RER sounds like an excellent option and like saving $$. Hope there are not too may steps up and down to get to the RER. I know in New York there are elevators but those are definitely not safe for a woman alone. My bag is small (carry-on size) and has good wheels and handles so it should be OK - especially since this line services the airport and thus one would hope would have accounted for hand baggage in the design of the RER stations
The odds are very good that the hotel will store your luggage for you before you check in. You say you'll be tired, but since the hotel is so close to Gare du Nord, it would be quite easy to take the RER B from CDG to Gare du Nord and walk from there. For detailed instructions (including photos) on using the RER, see the Paris by Train site.
Thanks so much for the great info.
Jo - the part about the bakery sold me. Un bon patisserie est toujours la grande chose. When I went to reserve a room the price seemed high ($180). The site also asked if I had any discount numbers or codes. I wonder if they have any agreement with AAA or with Rick Steves. I have his 2011 Paris book and saw that some places give discounts for a Steves book user. Also senior discounts - am over 60. I'll call AAA (am a member).
Thanks Bets. Just did it and it came up $180 for one night again. The reservation was through the Accor site. I did not go thru with the reservation - $65- $125 sounds better - and this would be a room for one person, one night.
Something's up. What date? There are two Ibises within a block or so along there. For some date later this month, one was $108, the other $142.
Bingo! Success! All booked including breakfast. Thank you everyone. This was the first time for me on this site and it is amazing how helpful everyone was. I will open another chat for the next stuff. My next effort will be a one night in Amsterdam. Then on tour for a week, then back to Paris and right up to Giverny for a few days. Wish I were staying much longer.
