Hotel Jungfrau vs. Hotel Eiger Muerren - Please help, so confused

We are traveling with out 3 and 5 year old. We want clean, pleasant accomodations and staff without breaking the budget. 1) which of these two hotels is everyone's fav 2) Should we do half board or just try different places for food.
We are planning on spending 6 nights in early September - is that too long?
One last question - would the kids be happier in Wengen since it's a bigger town - can we go there for dinner?

In Muerren I always recommend the Chalet Fontana www.chaletfontana.ch which is the number one rated hotel in Muerren on www.tripadvisor.com and for good reason. The owner, Denise, is a British lady who is exceptionally friendly and can offer you all kinds of travel advice for the area. The Chalet is clean, comfortable, includes breakfast and you can't find a cheaper place in Muerren or Wengen except, perhaps, the "Sleep in the Straw" accomodations in the area barns. Ask for the apartment in the Chalet because it is large and can accomodate up to 6 people.

I personally would not take half board anywhere because I like to explore, choose my own restaurants or snacks on my own time. It just seems to limit your freedom a bit.

You can easily travel to Wengen or Lauterbrunnen for dinner if you like. You can see exactly how long the trip takes at www.sbb.ch/en

Would the kids be happier in Wengen? Do they like shopping? Wengen has more hotels and shopping.

I would echo Tim's response about Chalet Fontana. We are greatly looking forward to our stay in the apartment this July! My kids are older (11 & 16) but they are seriously looking forward to Murren with its great hiking. It is also going to be a great "vacation from our vacation" where everyone can get out of the "city mode" for a few days. There is also a nice "sportzentrum" with an indoor pool, mini golf, etc. From what I understand, the grocery market is immediately across the street from the Chalet and there is a supplied kitchen - Good luck! I've read that the apt there is noisy? Shared baths won't work with a 3 & 5 year old. LOL

Thanks for the advice on board, if we decide to do a hotel.

ack, it ate my reply.

Both are fine to stay at.

Both have restaurants and bars, which you will probably use if you stay, as there are not many alternative restaurants that are not in other hotels.

For cost you might try the Eiger Guesthouse next door to the Eiger. Same owners, but they took over the formmer Hotel Belmont and renamed it.

It is not as well appointed as the Eiger, but is clean (well it was when I worked there years ago). The former proprietors now run the Hotel Jungfrau.

It is easy to spend weeks, even years in the Murren/Gimmelwald area, but with 2 young children you may be limited. They may not be happy about day long hikes or bike rides, so that limits what they can do in the town and on local transport.

Additionally travelling across to Wengen etc they might find boring (although they will need to change vehicleds several times en-route children tend to bore of travel quickly).

Wengen, Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Stechelberg are all possibilities as far as eating out, but watch the train timetable to make sure you can get back.

As far as kids activities in both - I don't think there is a lot in it between the two villages

You might be better to split your time between the 2 if you are planning on doing the Jungfraujoch as well as the Schilthorn, just to cut down on travel time, but they can be done as easy day trips from Murren if desired. (I used to go to Interlaken and spend most of the day there, so you can even do the boat rides on the lakes there once you know the timetables) - I recommend sbb.ch for swiss rail/boat/bus timetables.

Been to Murren twice. We stayed at the Alpina and will stay there again. Very friendly and the view can't be beat.
But the Eiger has the best restaurant in town. Allan and Veronica serve affordable and very tasty meals.

Michelle: Chalet Fontana's apartment has a PRIVATE bathroom. The rest of the rooms share bathrooms. Also, we stayed in the apartment for a week and never heard any noise or creaking floors above.

We Love Hotel Eiger! Absolutely love it! Very nice rooms. I recommend getting a balcony room overlooking the Alps. The staff are extremely nice and friendly. The restaurant and food is great. We are going to be there again in July and we can't wait. We also love Murren. It's a magical place.
