I'm trying to decide which hotel to make reservations at in Haarlem. I've never been to the city but both are centrally located.The price is much better at Carillon but it may be a complete dump? If someone has any experience with either of these two hotels please give advice.

I stayed at Hotel Carillon about three years ago. It was fine. The stairs are very steep, but I've heard that Joops also has this. I was in a cozy single with shared bathroom; the breakfast was fantastic. Lots of atmosphere, very convenient.

Swan, thank you so much for your reply about Hotel Carillon in Haarlem. I understand it has been refurbished? since you were there so it might even be improved. I got a great rate of 50euros/night with private bath & shower plus breakfast included.

The last time I stayed at the Hotel Joops, my room faced the street and there was lots of late night noise - if you do stay there avoid the "street view" rooms or ware ear plugs.
