Anyone have any suggestions for an overnight hotel stop in Trier?
It's been a couple of years since I was there, but I liked the Hotel Aulmann (http://www.hotel-aulmann.de/e_index.html). It's a little far from the station if you are spending the night between two train journeys, though.
What kind of hotel would you like, for how many, and when?
Coming in by train and then starting tour the next day.....so for 1 night
We stayed at the Mercure across the street from the Porta Nigra and were very satisfied. It was a 10 minute walk from the train station and at the beginning of the main shopping street in Trier. Their breakfast buffet is outrageously expensive (21 euros), but has everything you could dream of eating. I would also recommend the Zum Christophel, which is across the street. We didn't stay there, but had the best meals of our three weeks in Germany at the Zum Christophel. Certainly, their breakfast is less expensive. Bon voyage.
Our favourite hotel in Trier, by a long way, is the Hotel Petrisberg which is a relatively small family run hotel on the hill overlooking Trier above the station and near the University. It is a lovely location and a fabulous family. The included breakfast is very comprehensive and lovingly hand made. Rooms usually have a balcony overlooking the town and the hills beyond. Rooms tend to be around €100. Most guests speak German but the owners all speak good English. You may be better served in this instance staying down in the town. Have you contacted the tour hotel and inquired about staying the night before the tour with them? That would probably be the easiest way. Many people starting tours do stay the previous night at the tour hotels if they can.
We liked the Hotel Pieper which is on a fairly quiet side street near the train station. The lady that runs it is very nice and the breakfasts were excellent. http://www.hotel-pieper-trier.de/ Regards, Gary
