Hotel in Paris (me too)

I know there are bunch of threads with this same question but here is my predicament: I am overwhelmed with so many choices out there. I've been looking at Rick's Best of Europe and Trip Advisor. One of my questions is, should I stick with Rick's recommendations? or should I concentrate on tripadvisor for greater options.

Here is what I'm looking for and perhaps my choices can be narrowed down with your kind assistance.

Two beds,
Internet access (hopefully included)
Clean,
Under $180 a night
Access to metro/buses (within 10-15 minute walk) I'm relatively young and in good health.

Thank you in advance

Sergio,

Hotel Muguet seems to be popular with some of the group here. I believe it has all of the facilities that you mentioned.

Cheers!

Sergio, I've only been to Paris once, so I'm not an expert. We stayed at the Hotel Royal at 212 Raspail and I think it fits your requirements. It's in Montparnasse in the 14th. There were several metro stops nearby, one only about a block away. There are a lot of cafes nearby. It's near a busy intersection of blvds Montparnasse and Raspail, but there are nice quiet streets to explore.

It's a lot of fun to look on Google Earth on the street view to look around your prospective neighborhood.

Many hotels in Paris will fit your requirements! The only thing that might be a bit harder to find is in-room internet access, but many hotels offer a public computer.

I would recommend picking a neighborhood, then exploring the hotel options in that area. If you pick an area, it would easier for us to make a recommendation.

I have stayed twice at the Hotel Sevigne (rue de Malher)in the Marais. It's in Rick's book. To some the rooms are a little small but that's what you get in Europe - part of the back-door philosophy, yes? However, many rooms have balconies, the rates are very reasonable, it's clean, and the location is PERFECT. The metro stop is a block away (buses too), and you can walk down to the Ile St.Louis (my favorite part of Paris) and then over to Ile de la Cite (Notre Dame, etc). Place St. Catherine is about a block away too, with great bistros. The Marais section is terrific!

The one place I have stayed fits your criteria. Hotel Londres de Eiffel. In the RS book. Nice, clean room. Nice hostess. I think we paid 165 Euro per night. Super convienient to the Eiffel Tower, Rue Cler and Metro stop. Also free Wi-Fi in the rooms. Our room happened to be at the very top of the second floor. I don't recall seeing an elevator, so young and healthy helps. Learn where the light switch is in the stairway, cuz its dark and steep. I don't know if they had two beds in a room, but I am sure their website would say. Watch out for that late night Parisian television if you have small kids - I vividly remember that culture shock. :)

When we were planning our trip to Paris I looked at Hotel Sevigne but was concerned about their "one-night, no refund policy for any cancellation." We booked the Grand Hotel Jeanne d'Arc instead for nearly the same cost (89 Euro.) Also small rooms but in a great location in the Marais, an easy walk to Ile St. Louis, Place des Vosges and with a metro stop nearby. If you're going in the summer however, they don't have air conditioning.

How long are you staying in Paris? If more than 5 nights, you might consider renting an apartment. www.vacationinparis.com I am going to be there in a weeks time, the apartment is in the 6th arron close to Notre Dame & metro (5 min walk?) and is only $140 a night. It has internet access, though you would have to bring your laptop.

I'm only staying in Paris 3 nights but the suggestion of renting an apartment is an excellent one if I were longer.

I've looked at Eiffel-Kennedy hotel and it looks like a decent choice, any feedback on this choice from anyone reading this post?

We're staying here this summer, never been so I can't really recommend it. But, after looking through hundreds of hotel websites, reading trip advisor, trying to contact other recommended hotels and not getting any response, I finally chose this one. It has internet access and is close to the metro.

Check out the stairs! My daughter wanted to stay here because of the cool stairway. LOL! They are also very nice on the phone and speak English.

Thanks for the message Kathleen, when are you going to be there? I'm there April 2nd through the 5th, will you be there before those dates? I'd love to hear what you think of it.

Hotel Muget is a great spot. It is about five minutes from the Metro. We stayed in two different rooms, one more expensive than the other. (170 -200e)
The rooms were very clean. (I am pretty picky!) The morning meal was simple, but a great start to the day (9e) We appreciated the people at the front desk -they were typically formal, but very helpful. Our experience was wonderful. Check it out.

Enjoy Paris!

Looking on Trip Advisor is a good idea, simply because there are a lot more hotels listed and the reviews are updated all the time. RS guidebooks only come out once a year, so a hotel could have changed owners during this time and increased prices, gone downhill, etc. Paris certainly has enough hotels under your price range that there is no need for you to go over it. Just find a hotel that you like, that looks good for you and that has everything you want. If it does not fit your criteria, then look at the next one.

Question: you say 2 beds. Does this mean 2 single beds or 2 double beds? What time of the year are you going to Paris? If it is during the middle of the summer, I would look for a place with AC.

Sergio, we won't be there before you. We're going in July. Sorry. You can read the reviews on Tripadvisor, not all of them are positive but if you check most of the hotels out, there are always one or two bad reviews.
