The wife and I will be in Nuremburg for three days in April, while doing some geneological research at the Lutheran Church archives in the Veilhof district of the city.
Can anyone recommend a good (3-star?) hotel in Nuremburg that is fairly close to the downtown area?

We loved Nurnberg. You must stay in old town. Check out tripadvisor for hotels. We stayed at the Garni Probst because they have cheap triples - kinda sad rooms near a strip club but great breakfast and convenient and super nice people and near train station.

I stayed this April at the Hotel Marienbad about a block from the train station. It is three star with a good breakfast and decent rooms. Bath was small. English speaking person on the desk if that matters. You can easily get into the inner city by taking the underground walking passage from the train station. It is on a quiet side street.
