I am taking my 16 year old on his first trip to Germany in July. We plan to stay in Garmisch to hike the Alps. Any hotel or dining suggestions? We are looking for $$ but could go $ or $$$. Thanks, jcg
Check out the town's website: http://www.garmisch-partenkirchen.de/de/index.html?index=01 Lots of private lodgings (zimmer frei's) are in the listing. By the way, there is a summertime luge in Biberwier, close to Lermoos, in Austria. Lots of fun. My son, now 18, has enjoyed this luge on several trips. Have fun making lifetime memories with your son.
For dining...do you like Indian food? My two favourites in Garmisch are Taj Mahal and Bollywood Tandori (#2 and #3 on this list at Tripadvisor).
There are, of course, many traditional Bavarian style restaurants in the area, but I was excited about Indian food because there aren't too many places for it around me :D
Oh, and I just looked up the map for the sommerrodelbahn/luge that Denise posted about. That is way closer to Garmisch than the one next to Neuschwanstein. Awesome! Thanks for the info. I will have to stop at that one next time we head up there :D
In 2007 my husband and I stayed in Garmisch for 4 nights. We stayed at a B&B called Gastehaus Hohe Tannen. Is is located in a residential neighborhood, and it is within easy walking distance from town. They served a plentiful breakfast, which included several breads and spreads, meats, cheeses, yogurts, cereals and several juices and hot beverages. The price for this B&B was very reasonable. We had a delicious dinner at a traditional Bavarian restaurant called "Gasthof Zum Lamm", which was recommended by the owner of our B&B. I HIGHLY recommend asking locals for recommendations for restaurants. I have never been let down in all of Europe when I went to recommended restaurants.

Technically, it lies in Partenkirchen, but that's spliting hairs.
