We are staying one night in Engelberg before starting our hike through the Bernese Oberland. Any recommendations for a relatively inexpensive but good hotel in Engelberg?
You may be the first person in a couple of years to ask (on this board) about accommodations in Engelberg, a spectacular place (as you know) at the base of an awesome range of mountains, including Mt Titlis. It's refreshing to see someone going somewhere other than those Swiss locations recommended in Rick's books!I haven't been to Engelberg myself, maybe someone here has and will make a recommendation. So this is not a personal recommendation but a good site for accommodations is Viamichelin.com, and one of their recommended, yet relatively affordable, choices (you said relatively inexpensive but good) is Ski Lodge Engelberg. Go to Viamichelin.com to get more info on that and the other accommodations in Engelberg.
Hi Cheryl...I stayed at the Hotel Edelweiss with a group tour probably 8 yrs ago, & it was wonderful. Rooms big but basic, but the public areas are lovely. www.edelweissengelberg.ch is the website, I think. Looks as if prices have gone up, so don't know if it's within your budget...but they do offer free shuttle from the train station & rates include brkfst. About 100 yrs old, it perches on a hill overlooking the town, w/beautiful views of surrounding Alps. The Kuhns are very hospitable & helpful...even entertained us with a musical presentation after dinner w/their children, who are probably grown by now. Check reviews on Tripadvisor.
Thanks for the info! The 2 hotels mentioned were more than we wanted to pay, we will keep checking around. I appreciate your comments, Kent. I really like Rick Steves and his books but I was disappointed in his coverage of Switzerland. Switzerland is a beautiful country, particularily the Bernese Oberland area. We plan on hiking for 10 days from Engelberg to Kandersteg.
This probably doesn't help, but years ago I stayed at the HI Hostel in Engelberg, excellent, inexpensive accomodation and wonderful meals. I checked it out on the HI Hostels website and it is still the same hostel with a good rating.
