We're a family of 3 who need a hotel in Basel for 3 Nights.preferably no more than $175 a night.

I would suggest you check out the basel tourism website... http://www.basel.com I booked my stay at Hotel Schweizerhof last November through basel tourism and was very pleased with the hotel. I am not sure if $175 a night budget is doable, but the website has an extensive list of accommodations. As an FYI, the area around the train station is quite safe...not seedy like some other cities.
