I've had a difficult time booking the recommended hotels in Bacharach for a Saturday night in August. Everything is full due to the Rhine River Lights which is a fireworks display along the Rhine. I did go ahead and book Hotel Gelber Hof for 70 Euro thinking that I needed something. Is anyone familiar with this Hotel? It is close to Pension im Malerwinkel on Bluecherstrasse. Thanks for any information on this hotel or any advise on other places. Pension Letti said to check back in case there was a cancellation.

Have a look at this and zoom into the map. Find the street addresses of the other places you mentioned and compare the distance. Using maps.google.com you can even calculate distances between two addresses/places. http://www.hotel-gelber-hof.com/anreise.html

I haven't been there, myself, but in the last eight years I have booked byself into almost 30 hotels in Germany, all found on the Internet. They have all been small family run places, no big chains or multistar places. I have never been disappointed in any of them. This is Germany, they have high standard, it's a cultural thing.

Agree with Lee that you can pretty much count on your accommodations being clean and pleasant in this part of Germany. Guidebook recommendations aren't crucial.
You can book in other nearby towns as well if Bacharach is indeed booked. The trains should allow you to get from town to town quite easily. If traveling by train, be sure to check the location before booking - "suburbs" are often indicated by the name of the Main town followed by the suburb name (Bacharach-Steeg, for example) and these suburbs are often tucked away up a nearby river valley, far from the town and the train station.

St. Goar
