Hotel in Amsterdam

Any suggestions for a nice (4 star) hotel in the center that isn't too spendy? How to get there from airport?

To get to Centraal Station Amsterdam from the Schipohl Airport simply take the train. There are departures every ten minutes, travel time is 20 minutes.

A cheap four star hotel in central Amsterdam is a bit of an oxymoron:) I like to stay at the Golden Tulip Amsterdam Centre, by Amsterdam standards it's fairly cheap: about $250US a night:

For cheaper three star hotels check out the Ibis at Central Station or the Avenue Hotel.

Amsterdam is very expensive... very very very. I laugh every time someone tells me they would never go to Paris because it is so expensive . Here are some very good hotels. The Hotel Fita is nice. , but totally non- smoking , so if you smoke it is off limits. The Ambassade is very nice, We actually like the American which is now the Eden American. Check out the websites. You can email them and try to get lower prices if you are staying a few days. The American and the Ambassade are right in the action. The Fita is over by Vondel Park. All have elevators. The Fita does not have a restaurant, but free laundry, free calls to the USA and a lovely breakfast buffet. It is also the cheapest of the 3.

Jane: Good post. It reminds me of the plaintive request we often get here: "cheap but nice B&B in London, Amsterdam or Venice."

We like the 't Hotel on Leliegracht -- about a block from the Anne Frank house. Large rooms -- we get one with 3 large windows that overlook the canal. We're going again in March -- 175 euros including tax & breakfast.

Take the train to Amsterdam Centraal and then take a tram which will get you about 2 blocks away from the hotel.

My brother always stays at Hotel Hoksbergen. He states it's a good central location and reasonable at E98.00/double/night.

My wife and I stayed in Amsterdam using Priceline in 2007. Starting with a set price we felt reasonable and tried for a 5 star motel. The offer was rejected but re-entered same price 4 star - offer accepted. We stayed at a beatiful new high rise near central station over looking the water. We truly enjoyed the hotel and now use priceline with no reservation. I think its safe to say any 3 star or above will be very acceptable. Booking.com is another very user freindly place to look. Amsterdam is a wonderful city and very english speaking friendly. Enjoy!

I can't say good enough things about the Hotel Renaissance in Amsterdam. I have stayed there twice recently. It is VERY close to the train station and had great, large, clean rooms. There is a gym and the hotel is handy to many locations. Through the Mariott website I got the hotel for 100 Euros per night with my AAA discount. I see they have gone up a bit since then but it is worth it. Great staff as well.

I recently stayed at the Crowne Plaza in Amsterdam. It was a bit under $200 per night. It was nice and centrally located - .2 miles from the central train station - we walked from the station to the hotel and there was a tram stop right in front. I think they are doing renovations to their pool so there may be construction going on during the day, but that didn't bother me.
