Hello and greetings, Looking for some help finding a good hotel. We will have a car and what I'm looking for is some place on the quiet side. We aren't the late night type of people. A view of the river is a big plus! If I could have it all , a path close is the hotel where I could go for a run in the A.M. would be over the top. We like meeting the german people and I do speak a little German. Any help would be great! All the best! Monte
Hello Susan and Monte, We stayed at the Hotel Weinhaus Mayer in Zell and loved it (paid €86/night in May 2009). The room was clean and the staff were very nice, but the best part was we had a room overlooking the river and it had a balcony. We were able to buy a bottle of wine from the hotel (although there are wine shops all over Zell) and take it to our room, where we'd spend our evenings sitting on the balcony watching the river traffic (including swans) go by on the lazy Mosel (wine glasses and corkscrew provided in the room). I think of those evenings in Zell often and fondly. The hotel is located pretty much across the room from the river, where I seem to recall there may have been a path on which people were biking/jogging/walking. Lastly, we had a car, too, and the hotel directed us to the free parking spots across the street. However, I don't seem to recall they were specifically for the hotel, but in May there were many spots open. www.hotel-weinhaus-mayer.de
I spent four nights in 2008 at Gästezimmer Löhr in Treis, part of Treis-Karden, two villages on either side of the Mosel, connected by a bridge. I am also not into night life. I usually come back from dinner, the account of my travel on my website, write in my journal, and retire. Treis is definitely quiet. The train station is in Karden, on the other side of the river. Gästezimmer Löhr is not a hotel. It's really what I would call a Privatezimmer. It's a family home with two rooms (an apartment and a double room), on the top floor. The apartment has a small kitchen nook and skylights. The double room does have a window looking in the direction of the river, but I don't know what you can see. The breakfast room is on the ground floor. There is a first floor (our second), and the rental rooms are on the 2nd floor under the roof. So there are some stairs. Herr Löhr works, I believe, for an American company and speaks excellent English, but he did let me speak German, and I never heard English anywhere else in town.
We stayed in Beilstein at Haus Lippmann and loved it. Had a great view of the Mosel. The meals there were very good-all were served by candlelight. Wonderful staff and plenty of parking available. I would think that running along the river would be an option for you. The Mosel area is much prettier than the Rhine. Be sure to see Burg Eltz.
I agree about the Haus Lipmann in Beilstein. Lovely hotel fronting the river. There is hotel parking in the lot across the street next to the river. You can hike up to the castle ruins above the town for a great view over the river. The town is small, which is part of it's charm, but there isn't much in the way of nightlife. http://www.hotel-haus-lipmann.de/english/index.htm
Hi Susan and Monte Let me highly recommend Hotel Moselflaire in Cochem. The hotel is on the quiet side of the Mosel, but offers fantastic view of Castle, town and river, A 5-ten minute walk or run) into town.
The hotel rooms are smallish, reasonbly priced, very good breakfast, lovely patio. We enjoyed staying there and got very good tips from the owner about restaurants, etc. Mike DC
If you are looking for something really quiet you can check out Piesport. We stopped there one night at the end of a day of sight seeing along the Mosel and it was gettting quite late. Stopped at a small hotel where a young lady who looked to be 18 or 19 and was the daughter of the owners checked us into our room. We asked if there was any place in town to eat. She made a call to her mother and father who were down at a small restaurant located right on the banks of the Mosel across the river from the vineyards. They were closed for serving meals and the locals were still there enjoying their wine and in some cases beer. Her father talked to the owner of the place and they agreed to prepare something for us to eat. We strolled through the neighborhood down to the river and found the place. The father was waiting for us at the gate and let us in. Even though it was dark the setting was great. Locals enjoying their drinks and conversations in a peaceful setting right by the river on a warm night in June. We sat outside under the stars and ate our less than fancy but good meal and just soaked it all in with the locals having a good time. It was really one of the nice memories of that trip. We left the next day to continue on with our trip so I cannot tell you much about the town other than it was very small and super quiet. It is not too far from Trier. From what I have read about it though there are hiking trails along the river and bikes available for rental if you enjoy that. The hotel we stayed at was right on the road and not a good view of the river but if you check around on the internet you could probably find a place that might interest you with a nice view of the river. Not some place you would stay for a long time but for a nice relaxing place to recharge your batteries and jog along the banks of the Mosel it might fill the bill.
I 3rd the Haus Lipmann in Beilstein. We had a great view out our window of the Mosel, which was a little foggy when I woke up, it had a barge moving up it and a pleasure boat. It seemed like the river equivalent of a winding German road, whereas the Rhein was the river equivalent of the autobahn. Great people, good food and a spectacular location!
Gute Fahrt
in 2006 i stayed at the "peter weis apartments." associated with the fj weis winery. [email protected]. it was a large condo, on the river. it was close to a bridge, which brought some traffic. it was a close walk into zell, plenty of parking. full kitchen if that is your deal. really nice people, really nice place. enjoy zell, it is awesome. have fun, be safe.
